Packaging has become a focus of new and emerging regulations, such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws which shift the costs of managing used packaging from municipalities to the “producers” of the packaging. With regulatory demands looming, and additional stakeholder pressure mounting, the business case is strong for building an effective, sustainable packaging tracking program. Do you do business in Oregon, Colorado, Maine, California, or Minnesota? Do your suppliers have business in any of the above states? If so, it's time to learn the ins-and-outs of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws across the U.S. — where brands and companies pay for packaging they put into the marketplace and provide incentives for producers to incorporate environmental considerations into product and packaging design. EPR is expanding, with these states exploring regulations: NY, MA, NJ, MD, NC, RI, NH, IL, HI, TN, WA; and more to come. I had the opportunity this week to present to the FMI- The Food Industry Association on sustainable packaging, providing an update on EPR policy, as well as the US Plastics Pact's workshops, forthcoming playbooks, updates to plastics lists, and Roadmap 2.0 which extends through 2030. As EPR laws will shift the financial responsibility away from the public sector to the producer, with government oversight, many organizations are seeking guidance in this journey. Please reach out to me with your questions. Pure Strategies, Inc. is helping companies to prepare (e.g., with developing reuse options, changing packaging designs, sharing data with suppliers, etc.) — I'd love to discuss how we can support you.
