#SelfCleaningScreens - A perforated plate that supports the sliders is replaced by applying a heavy mesh to the bottom of a standard screen tension ring. The required amount of sliders or cleaners are placed on top of the mesh. The mesh is then epoxy bonded to the ring which sandwiches the cleaners between both mesh screens. The purpose is to speed up change-out time and to eliminate the costly perforated plates which commonly crack and become loose and noisy. It is most economical to return these units to the factory for replacement of the top mesh since the sliders and support mesh in most applications should last a lot longer than the finer screen that does the sizing. Backer rod seems to be the industry favorite - is it better than bond breaker tape to mitigate three sided adhesion in joint sealant design? A quick recap on 3-sided adhesion.. ▪️What is it? When two substrates move, the sealant acts elastically to bridge those two materials. If the sealant is in contact with a third surface, it cannot properly move and will remain inelastic. ▪️What is the downside? A three-plane adhesion system induces additional stresses to the caulk or sealant during the movement cycles of the joint, causing either adhesive or cohesive failure (or both). ▪️How to avoid it? A bond breaking tape can be used to prevent this condition, and maintain a two-plane adhesion system instead. *Caveat = most backer rods can serve as a bond breaker as well, and thus a separate bond breaker would not be necessary. With that, is there an answer to the question above?

Ideally the width to depth ratio (W/D) should not exceed 0.5 with most manufacturers suggesting a max depth of 0.5" or 12mm. The shape of the sealant plays a role to ensure the proper movement of the sealant as well. Thus, the "hour-glass" shape with extra material attached to the substrate and a thinner profile to deform during movement - backer rod is the strong preference. From an installer's perspective, most installers have challenges getting tape to stay in the correct position - and even if it does, it can have a shape that is not conducive to maximizing the movement capability due to the shape of the formed seal being the inverse to the design of the optimized joint with the "hour-glass" shape. Closed cell only as mentioned previously.
