The Citrus Academy periodically conducts a skills survey amongst all employers in the citrus industry to determine current and future skills and employment trends. This data is used when the industry reports to government and other stakeholders. In addition, it has come to our attention that there are skills shortages developing in some regions, in particular in occupations such as farm and packhouse managers, quality control staff and technical staff. It is critical that we gather information on these shortages so that we can plan ahead and assist. Please go to https://lnkd.in/gWF3uRiS to complete the survey. Please note that the questionnaires in the survey can be completed online or by downloading and completing fillable PDF documents, which can also be downloaded on the webpage. Furthermore, there are separate questionnaires for farms, packhouses, nurseries and other enterprises (holding or management companies, processing units, etc.). A separate questionnaire must be completed for each business unit. Please read the instructions on the webpage carefully. Your participation in this survey is critical and sincerely appreciated. If you have any questions or comments, please contact sive@citrusacademy.org.za.

Hiring Right and Retaining Willing Skill sets. Skill set needs set the culture of every organizational practice. Farming in particular, getting the right skill set can be more challenging. Skill set availability tends to be time sensitive. Yet, engaging the right skill set has more to do with the stage of the farm and the skill set's motivation than it has to do with availability. Circumspection in engaging skill sets that resonate the culture aspirations and values that the farm tends to deliver is the criteria for labeling a skill set right option or not. Engaging a skillset is much easing to keeping a skill set employed on the farm. 1.It is easy to hire a dumb person but harder to hire a smart person. 2.It is hard to recruit a willing employee, but it is easy to keep such employee. 3.It is easy to employ a skillful employee but it is hard to keep such employee. 4.It is easy to employ a novice but costly to develop. It tends out that the stage of the farm and the motivations of the skill set determines if a skill set is a right choice or will stay with the farm. #RightHiring #FarmHiring #SkillsetHiring #FarmingSkillset

Only 14% of companies reported experiencing a severe shortage of staff in agronomic, engineering, and land services. This figure does not seem critical, yet a majority of respondents (64%) have encountered staff shortages in specific departments and positions. Our new study as part of the Agrohub HR360 Benchmarking shows that the greatest demand is for skilled workers such as locksmiths, turners, welders, and electricians, as well as line agronomists and repair and energy engineers. More details about how the number, income and bonuses of personnel in agribusiness among the agronomic, engineering and land groups of positions changed in the first half of 2024 at the link https://lnkd.in/emR3Gvxq #data #research #businessresearch #benchmarking #analitycs #HR #agrobusiness

How to be better at our jobs? In order to improve on job, we can rely on our own motivation to self-study outside of our working hours. But I think that is not realistic for many people have other commitments and a private social life outside of working hours. So, the best way is to incorporate on-the-job training. With my new colleague here, we did the following: 1. Teach him on-the-job with well-prepared work instructions 2. Just find pockets of time at work and teach him the working concepts and theories 3. Incorporate a sense of responsibility and accountability 4. Do revisions and repetitions 5. Have a systematic method of assessment with agreeable key performance indicators #job #training #competency #onthejobtraining #hr #malaysia #agriculture #farm #paddy

Dear Nursery Managers, Stop Farming Free CVs It's time to end the practice of asking for free CVs without proper follow-up or intention to hire. This tactic wastes time and devalues the recruitment process. Candidates deserve respect and transparency. If you’re not ready to invest in quality staff, you’ll struggle to attract top talent. Pay fairly, or face the reality of losing good candidates to nurseries that do. The choice is yours. Either elevate your recruitment practices or accept the consequences of poor hiring decisions.

I still receive job alerts from Horticulture Jobs automatically (really need to get those turned off, very annoying)… but actually, I find the majority quite amusing now. A company promoted as a ‘featured job’ or ‘premium job’ has now been advertising to fill a role for the past 4 months! This will have cost potentially thousands… So, clearly something isn’t working, there is a reason people arent accepting an offer for the role- I don’t accept that not one decent candidate has come through the door yet. There’s another one that’s about to tick over to the 4 month mark as well. Private estates and landscaping firms seem to struggle massively… and given the toxic culture of some of these places (I have experienced first hand) - I’m not surprised at all. Also, money talks- obviously… still learning that one- come on horticulture, you can do it! Hopefully by the end of the next century… Is the job market really that awful for employers to recruit in horticulture? Surely not! But, the evidence suggests otherwise. There are so many good, highly qualified people in this industry - look how many are on LinkedIn! So this must suggest the employer needs to try a new recruitment tactic I’d have thought? I will however sympathise with the fact that private estates can be in the middle of nowhere and some companies are difficult for potential candidates to travel too. But, that’s when as an employer you should consider the package you offer to tempt the right people to apply, they arent going to drive three hours for a pittance or nickel are they?- common sense. ‘The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.’ Albert Einstein unsurprisingly is spot on. I apologise for the James May style ramble and will go to bed now.

biggest lie told to us as First-Gen about jobs in service / food industry is… 💥that a “low-skilled” job can’t be transferred into white collar jobs low-skilled is defined as: jobs that require little formal education or training - example: cooks, farm workers, grocery clerks 😕most first-gen come from low-income families & as a result have to work in service / food industries job to pay for college, bills, help the family, etc 🌟whatever the job is, it requires a unique set of skills and knowledge to perform it 💥creating this idea of “low-skilled” jobs erases the skills that all workers bring to their jobs & minimizes their experiences as first-gen to build a professional career Most people who never work in service based jobs, can’t even do the following: 🌱changing my oil 🌱line-cook and doing a rush hour 🌱being a server / cook 🌱working in agriculture so don’t minimize the work experience of others until you tried it. 🌟First-gen your experiences are valid and worthy of an opportunity, just learn to describe accurately & value you bring with it
