For the 4th year in a row, I've received permission from the Texas Bar to provide pro bono legal services to Texans. I'm not licensed in Texas, but the Bar has a beautiful program in which attorneys who are licensed in good standing in other jurisdictions can request permission from the Texas Bar to provide pro bono legal services here as long as we're supervised by a licensed Texas attorney. My pro bono work tends to center on landlord-tenant disputes with a focus on helping tenants. Texas is pro-landlord so tenants who are going up against big commercial landlords can have a really tough time. There are very strict deadlines that must be adhered to (which tenants are often (understandably) unaware of) and rights and remedies for tenants can be limited. I love that the Texas Bar has this program for attorneys who aren't licensed here, but want to practice in some capacity. Personally, I believe that excellent legal representation is a *right* not a privilege. As a lawyer, I hold tremendous power and privilege, and I have access to outstanding resources. It's important to me to use my power and privilege in service to creating a better, more equitable, and more just world. #ProBono #Lawyer #Attorney

Excellent points by my colleague Evan Rassman about how to advance in law and move the industry forward in 2024. This part, in particular, is absolutely correct and crucial for mid size firms to remain places where young lawyers want to build their careers: “I want to inspire the industry to create a more enjoyable, more corporate yet relaxed workplace that encourages and rewards collaboration and meaningful relationships. I want to see law firms push attorneys to develop relationships with clients earlier in their careers rather than wait until mid- or late career. Why wait to be where you wanted to be 20 years earlier?”
