Very happy to see this out on #WorldRefugeeDay! In our piece, Eleonora Milazzo, PhD and I argue that argue that the EU approach to cooperation with 3rd countries in the #NewPact on #migration and #asylum and beyond falls short of ensuring adequate protection of refugees and to pursue genuinely balanced partnerships based on mutual interests. We recommend policy-makers and authorities implementing the new rules to: 📌 Put fundamental rights at the centre of any form of cooperation with third countries, through rigorous impact assessment, monitoring, and explicit human rights conditionality; 📌 Prioritise funding projects in third countries with a protection component or which facilitate legal migration over those with a containment objective; 📌 Avoid entering into partnerships with autocratic and highly unstable regimes; 📌 Take into account the interests of third countries when negotiating partnerships, and avoid prioritising deterrence and return at the expense of other foreign policy objectives; 📌 Engage more with the evidence on the drivers of migration before formulating and implementing policies to contain migration. The policy study is part of a series developed by the European Policy Centre and the Odysseus Academic Network for Legal Studies on Immigration and Asylum in Europe in collaboration with FEPS Europe and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. I often say in my classes that borders are the most essential in international relations. We think about world politics and mind starts visualising world map, which is based on borders. Relationships between IR and Borders are made for each other. In the given brief lecture I proposed a border study approach (Limological approach) to study International Relations.

Many young people growing up in Alice Springs & other remote communities can't see what opportunities in life might lie ahead for them. They see their parents & grandparents, see the poverty all around them, the lack of opportunities in life. They see other Aussies living great lives on TV & social media but not them or their people. The curfew is a short-term circuit breaker to street violence but it's not a long-term fix around education, healthcare, housing, employment or the lifetime opportunities that are needed. There is a way of creating real & meaningful jobs in Alice & other remote communities through modern technology. India & Philippines created tens of thousands of jobs and lifted many more out of poverty by establishing call centres & selling their services. A recent poll indicated 72% of Aussies don't like calls they make to local companies being answered by overseas operators. We can fix that by creating virtual call centres across Australia which would create real & meaningful jobs for all Australians living in rural & remote communities. The technology exists.
