City of Cape Town’s Post

Cape Town a catamaran-building mecca In the past year, Cape Town boat builders have produced around 330 catamarans, the majority of which are exported. This is more than any other city in the world. This demand for Capetonian marine products is largely thanks to the City’s funding of special-purpose vehicle BlueCape, which promotes the local boat-building industry and supports skills development. In addition to the manufacture of catamarans, South Africa is also highly regarded for producing top-quality semi-rigid boats and rescue craft, says BlueCape, and several manufacturers operate in this sub-sector. Moreover, the demand for these diverse boat types has led to a rise in the number of component and equipment manufacturers producing items such as sails, masts, rigging components, marine-grade rope, aluminium doors, upholstery, carbon-fibre hatches, engine components, and stainless-steel accessories. Cape Town’s marine manufacturing industry is valued at over R3 billion per annum and is growing at an impressive rate of over 17% annually. As demand grows, so too does the need for an ever-expanding skilled workforce. This is why the City proudly supports BlueCape to drive work-readiness initiatives and promote the Mother City’s boat-building industry among investors. #TourismMonth #ChooseCapeTown #TourismIndustry
