Can disability inclusion be summed up in a simple maths formula? Dwayne Fernandes, champion double amputee stair climber thinks so.
Dwayne and Giancarlo de Vera, members of our Inclusion (Disability) Advisory panel, had an entertaining conversation to celebrate International Day of People with Disability.
What do you think of Dwayne's succinct equation?
#IDPwD is celebrated around the world to promote community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.

In an allied profession, archives, we might ask questions about:
i) when (if at all) disability is raised as a relevant aspect of an archived person's life
ii) how (in-)accessible catalogues are
iii) the ethics of disability content needing to be searched for using outdated language like cripple, lunatic, or idiot
iv) how sight/reading focused our collections are (and what we are doing about it)
v) recruitment barriers (and 'old-fashioned' managerial views)

Breaking Down Barriers: In our commitment to fostering disability inclusion, we recognise terminology can be a stumbling block for many employers.
That's why we're launching a new series, 'Word of the Week', to demystify key terms. This week, we delve into the world of 'Disability.'
Image description: Image with a teal background featuring white text defining the term "Disability". The definition reads: "Disability, noun. Under the Equality Act 2010, a person is considered disabled if they have a physical or mental impairment that significantly and long-term affects their ability to perform normal daily activities. Specifically:" The text is presented in a clear and informative style.

What practical steps can organizations take to make their products and services more accessible to the Disability Market?
The first step is to open yourself up to feedback from customers and employees with disabilities. Their input is invaluable for identifying gaps in your current accessibility efforts. And remember, if the feedback is uncomfortable, that’s often a sign you’re on the right track toward positive change. The second step is to consult with an accessibility professional.
At Real Life Access, we offer coaching and consulting to help organizations prioritize their accessibility needs and develop a plan that fits their budget. Accessibility doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated—it just takes the right approach and a willingness to make change.

I think this post is really interesting!
What I take away from it is that— Sometimes, seemingly small things can create a barrier for someone with a disability/disabled person.
On the other hand, many of these concerns can be addressed with solutions that have minimal disruption (e.g. sending out a meeting agenda the day prior, clear communication, written instructions, etc.).
I’d love to know y’alls thoughts on this though!

Did you know it’s Disability History Month?
Running from November 16th to December 16th, this month is dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities while raising awareness of the barriers they’ve faced throughout history.
It’s an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come in creating more inclusive environments—and how much work still needs to be done. Whether it’s in the workplace, education, or public spaces, accessibility and understanding are key to ensuring everyone can thrive.
Let’s use this month to learn, listen, and continue building a world where equality and inclusion aren’t just ideals but everyday realities.
What are you doing this month to champion disability inclusion?

It aimed at strengthening pro-persons with disabilities policies in a sustainable working relationship and information sharing with key decision-makers in the country. Participants were drawn from both government and non-state actors to discuss the status of disability issues and a push for national commitment for increased priority and budget for persons with disabilities. This was held at the Freetown City Council's Conference Hall on the 7th November, 2024.
