The European Union’s new Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) will expand oversight of third-party suppliers to address human rights violations. Risk and compliance specialists have raised concerns about the challenges of conducting due diligence, citing the perceived subjectivity of what constitutes a human rights violation. In a recent article, International Trade and Business and Human Rights Associate Sally Alghazali clarifies, “The CS3D refers to international standards adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Conventions and other international labor organizations.” Corporations may want to begin evaluating their current practices against these standards as “[it] will take time to set up a compliance framework for the CS3D and other countries are considering similar supply chain requirements,” says Alghazali.
