The British Snack Co. just bagged a Gold Award at The Grocer #newproductandpackagingawards in the Innovative Pack of the Year category! 🏆 The pioneering kerbside recyclable crisp packet developed by EvoPak and made with #hydropol was recognised as providing a huge leap forward for flexible packing in the snack food sector. It is the first crisp packet that can go into domestic recycling bins and allows for up to 100% fibre recovery in the paper mill. Over 6 billion bags of crisps are consumed in the UK every year and can't be recycled at home. Instead consumers have to take them back to store with other flexible plastics, which is inconvenient, and as recent studies have shown, often results in them being incinerated, sent to landfill or downcycled. 🌳 NEW: Up to 70 per cent of soft plastic given to supermarket recycling schemes ends up being incinerated, an investigation by Everyday Plastic and the Environmental Investigation Agency shows Tracking devices placed in 40 bundles of soft plastic packaging and deposited at recycling points in Sainsbury’s and Tesco shops around the UK showed that the plastic collectively travelled more than 25,000km The majority ended up either converted into pellets burnt for fuel or transported to incineration facilities in the UK, Netherlands and Sweden The rest arrived at recycling facilities — mostly in Turkey — that recycle soft plastics into low-value products like bin bags The reliance in incineration is a major problem. Every tonne of dense plastic burnt is estimated to produce more than two tonnes of CO₂ There are also concerns about the health implications of the toxic gases, dioxins and microplastics produced by burning plastic waste. The new satchel range, launched in partnership with Better Packaging Co., is made of certified potential Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) - plastic waste collected within 50 kilometres of a coastline in regions lacking formal waste management systems. https://lnkd.in/gH2Hb57x

This is a soft plastics recycling bin in a UK supermarket. Perhaps you use them? Or do you produce product packaging that needs to go into them? This is interesting. The majority of pots are black, so big changes afoot for horticultural industry. Starting in 2026, all non-black, recyclable PET or PP plastic plant pots will be accepted in household kerbside recycling in England. #Defra confirmed this move following a successful long-term advocacy campaign from the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), which will help reduce plastic waste. https://lnkd.in/eBS5EDZP.

Researchers highlight the necessity of monitoring Non-Intentionally Added Substances and aligning them with regulations to limit the use of potentially harmful additives in plastics.
