David Lehrer - Checking in from COP29 Azerbaijan: Science, Technology, and Innovation
"Yesterday at COP29, the spotlight was on Science, Technology, and Innovation— a theme that resonates deeply with the challenges and opportunities in tackling the climate crisis. I attended two inspiring side events that showcased the power of innovation, partnerships, and community action:
1. 𝐀 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐧𝐬, 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - Facilitated by Emilie McGlone from Peace Boat US, this session explored the transformative potential of renewable energy in climate mitigation.
𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘦𝘥:
-Tatsuya Yoshioka, Founder of Peace Boat Ecoship, shared the visionary project of building a solar-sail-powered cruise ship, capable of reducing fossil fuel consumption by 40%.
- Jacquelyn Francis, Founder of the Keeling Curve Prize, spotlighted Greentech startups awarded for driving impactful climate solutions.
- Caitlyn Hughes, Executive Director of Solar Cookers International, emphasized the health and environmental benefits of replacing polluting stoves with solar cookers for 2+ billion people globally.
Yoshioka Tatsuya's closing remarks were particularly poignant: sustainability and peace are interconnected. He reminded us of the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine diverting global attention from the climate crisis.
On a personal note, I had the chance to discuss potential cooperation with Emilie on a food security initiative for Gaza—an exciting opportunity to explore further.

2. 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 6: 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬, 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬, & 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬; 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 & 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 - This session examined progress on Article 6.2 of the #ParisAgreement, which enables international cooperation in carbon markets. Representatives from Ghana, Thailand, and Senegal shared how Article 6.2 is driving decarbonization projects that wouldn't have been economically feasible otherwise.
𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴:
- Gregor Sahler (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH) emphasized the importance of high-integrity carbon markets and implementation challenges.
- Vicky Janssens (KliK Foundation) highlighted their work facilitating carbon market trades between Least Developed Countries (#LDCs) and developed nations.
Thinking about Prof. Jim Skea’s warning that countries must achieve their NDCs by 2030, less than 6 years away, makes me wonder if these amazing achievements are going to be enough. "
