Cleantech Market Innovation - market snapshot Today I'm going to start with a snapshot across some of the startups I've interacted with in recent months with WOVEN. This is not wider market analysis, database of startups or startups in market sectors we looked to pursue specifically. These are organisations I have directly talked with online or at events, reviewed pitch decks or seen pitch for funding at events. The sample size is relatively limited, but is >110 organisations at various stages of TRL / CRL and funding / investment, so interesting to see as a wider picture. Some of this is of course influenced by what events, what content I've written and what inbound and outbound leads have been generated. What's fascinating to me, and therefore has been such an exciting journey with WOVEN, is the breadth across the cleantech and energy spectrum. It has been incredibly exciting to talk with founders and learn more about the challenges, innovations and new technologies across such diverse sectors and capabilities. I have learned a huge amount about markets, applications and processes I wasn't even aware of a few months ago! There are some incredible startups and organisations out there looking to have impact and help us all meet our sustainability and decarbonisation goals. But most interesting of course are the people behind the startups and what drives them forward; 🟢 the determination 🟢 the risk 🟢 the motivation 🟢 the commitment Not all will make it to full commercialisation of course - the failure rate is high for startups in cleantech and in general as we all recognise, but some are already well on their way to making an impact. The Cleantech Illusion: Why Most ‘Green’ Startups Are Just Blowing Hot Air 🌱💨 People are going to HATE this post. But it’s time to call out the elephant in the room. We’ve all seen it: startups boasting about “sustainability,” “green tech,” and “cleantech innovations.” They throw around these buzzwords like confetti at a parade. But here’s the harsh truth: many of these so-called ‘innovative’ companies are just recycling old ideas with a shiny new label. The cleantech hype often falls flat for several reasons: 1. Buzzwords Without Substance: Companies use terms like “sustainable” and “green” to attract attention and funding, but when you look closer, there’s often little innovation. They repurpose existing technologies and present them as groundbreaking. 2. Lack of Measurable Impact: Many cleantech startups make grand promises but fail to deliver measurable results. They focus on marketing more than on developing effective solutions that genuinely reduce environmental impact. 3. Overhyped and Under-Delivering: The industry is flooded with startups that are great at generating buzz but poor at executing their visions. Investors and stakeholders are left disappointed when these startups can’t scale or meet their lofty goals. The truth is, while there are genuine innovators out there, the market is saturated with companies that talk big but deliver small. It’s time we started looking beyond the buzzwords and demanded real, measurable innovation. The real pioneers in cleantech are those who can back their claims with tangible results, and they are often overshadowed by the noise of the pretenders. Let’s stop celebrating mediocrity and start holding startups accountable for their claims. Cleantech startup Sprih has raised seed funding of $3 Mn (about Rs 25 Cr) led by Leo Capital, with participation from entrepreneurs and climate experts globally. The startup plans to use the fresh capital for sales and marketing activities, acquiring talent for creation of AI models centred on climate and broadening its partner ecosystem to aid customers in implementing climate solutions.
