What are you hungry for? 🤔 Whenever you want to reach for food, try and ask yourself this question: What am I hungry for? What kind of hunger do I have? Is it literal hunger? Then go and eat! 😋 Or is it metaphorical hunger? This can come up as emotional hunger, when we crave the feeling of love, of belonging, of purpose. Or it can be hunger to fill a void. This comes up when we are bored or unfufilled, or when we grieve someone. There are myriads of hungers. Our job is to find out which one we are experiencing, and from there to make choices that are good for us and align with our values. Are you physically hungry or emotionally hungry? How do you tell them apart? It can be tricky when you often eat to self soothe but physical hunger and emotional hunger can present differently. The speed of the urge to eat and the specificity of the cravings can both offer key clues. I’ll be covering other common differences over the next few days but can you resonate with this? The evenings - after work and family commitments are complete - can be a real trigger point for many, as we we may feel stressed, drained, and generally rung out. So we go looking for comfort- and if the brain has learnt that it can quickly find it in food, then that is where it will lead you. What are your most common cravings if you’re feeling stressed/low/anxious and looking for food? Me? Chocolate for low mood and crisps when I’m stressed!! What do I do about it? I take a breath and do something else to help soothe myself- THEN if I still want to eat, I do. But by that point it will be a conscious and calm experience with no guilt. And I can now stop when I’m satisfied. I’m happy with that balance. The food is still available and I may choose it- but it doesn’t control me.
