Looking forward to sharing findings from the ACCESS Advancing Capacity for Climate Environment Social Science Net Zero Task Force today with members of the Institution of Environmental Sciences, an organisation that promotes environmental protection and conservation, and performs related education and meta-analysis of scientific research. Reaching out to scope shared understandings and potential collaborations across disciplinary boundaries. "New thinking on social and cultural change is required if government is going to reach its net zero target. Technology alone will not be enough. People, our societies and our systems need to change and adapt to meet our net zero goals. The ESRC funded ACCESS project brought together a task force of 10 leading academics to call for the government to make more consistent and effective use of social science, to build a more sophisticated understanding of societal change and to plan next steps to achieve net zero ambitions. Prof Patrick Devine-Wright will discuss the findings and recommendations of the newly launched report 'Making a Net Zero Society: Follow the Social Science', as well as the wider work of ACCESS".

I just attended a deep dive into the future of international #carbontrading under #Article 6 of the Paris Agreement hosted by Singapore’s NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions. The discussions were insightful, and the impressive venue lent a quintessential ambience for the ‘student-audience’ to learn strategy and progress across 💦#BlueCarbon projects & #Nature-based solutions relevance in carbon markets. 💦Inventory runs of above ground carbon and remote sensing 💦Singapore caps carbon credits to offset 5% of emissions 💦Climate Action Tracker and consideration small nations need to resolve 💦Equitable outcomes for women, indigenous folks, and local communities The ~80 questions raised by the audience was a highlight, scribing the cluster themes: ✍🏻Price discovery, pricing parity, funding, opportunity cost ✍🏻Combing strengths of compliance and voluntary markets ✍🏻Business models, scaling, commercialization ✍🏻NDCs, best practices, cross learning ✍🏻Tech for measurement, reporting, verification accuracy A noteworthy and overarching response from a speaker - we could address these recurring questions via pilot and more pilot(s) execution, and I agree! This time last month, I was in the wonderful city of Montréal absorbing knowledge like a sponge at the PECS-3 Pathways to Ecosystem Resilience conference. While there, I was offered the opportunity (and daunting task) of reflecting on an excellent plenary - in which Odirilwe Selomane and Georgina Cundill Kemp challenged a packed room of researchers to re-consider years of academic tradition and explore new partnerships capable of driving change. What stuck with me most was the insight that acting on climate change and biodiversity loss is not a knowledge problem. In fact, collecting data is the easy part. Interpreting and way finding too. The hard part is activating that knowledge and driving action. Despite all the information we have, how to do that effectively remains the missing piece of the puzzle that unlocks and amplifies change. As with many challenges the world faces today... we know enough to act. Now we need get serious about finding, and supporting, the right people to move evidence into action. Say hello to our 2024/25 Earth Fellows! Next up in our profile series is Katherine Taylor: Postgraduate Earth Fellow: University engagement with COP Katherine is a PhD researcher within the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh researching compound drought and heatwave events and whether these can be reconstructed over the last millennium to understand future climate risks. As an Earth Fellow, Katherine will be ensuring that the University is able to engage effectively with both Biodiversity and Climate COP - identifying links between the University research areas and the priorities for both meetings. Prior to starting her PhD, Katherine worked in a variety of roles across the Civil Service developing her interest in climate policy and governance.   Q: What is your background and how do you think it will help you in your work as an Earth Fellow?    My background is in climate science, particularly long-term climate reconstruction and the causes and impacts of anthropogenic climate change. Following the completion of an MPhil in Holocene Climates, I worked in a variety of roles across the Civil Service providing me with exposure to the policymaking process, and experience of managing stakeholders and evaluating progress against organisational aims. This background will help me to translate science and policy-focused documents into material that is relevant to the stakeholders that I will be working with and apply the findings of the project to the University’s engagement with COP going forward.   Q: What is your project at the Edinburgh Earth Initiative about, and what is your role within it?   My project aims to ensure that the University is able to engage effectively with COP and will involve evaluating the ability of the University to contribute to international policy, the opportunities to develop partnerships to progress biodiversity and climate goals, and assessing how the learnings from COP meetings can aid in meeting the University’s sustainability targets. I will be briefing COP attendees on the themes and priorities for each conference and developing a monitoring and evaluation framework to assess the University engagement with COP both at the conference and via on campus events.
