A historic step at #COP16 Colombia: the creation of a subsidiary body for indigenous peoples who will have a decisive role in the implementation of the CBD. • After decades of struggling to be heard, Indigenous Peoples are finally officially recognised as vital stewards of nature in the text of the CBD. COP16 made good progress in ensuring their participation in global decision-making processes - Article 8 (j) • Two big decisions were made during the closing plenary in the early hours of this morning, article 8 (j) (traditional knowledge): - established a subsidiary body to enable the full and effective participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in the work undertaken under the CBD. - recognition of  the crucial role that people of African descent play in conserving biodiversity. • Now the decisions on funding mechanisms need this to translate into financial recognition: financial mechanisms need to be put in place to ensure the stewards of nature get compensation for their services to our planet.  •

🕊️ Today, #COP29 highlights a powerful and timely theme: Peace, Relief, and Recovery The intersection of agriculture 👨🌾, climate change 🌍, and peace 🕊️ is critical, as sustainable farming practices not only address climate challenges but also play a key role in conflict prevention and sustaining peace. As we drive this conversation forward, it's essential to ground it in real-world examples. That's why I'm excited to share the release of a "Guidance Note for Practitioners - Leveraging Climate-Smart Agriculture for Peace: Insights from a Bundle of Interventions in Ghana." This guidance note draws on lessons and experiences from the implementation of climate-smart agriculture practices and technologies in Jirapa village, Ghana. These interventions have helped mitigate local conflict risks while creating the enabling conditions for peace. 🌎 #COP16 is well underway in Cali, Colombia! In 2022, governments struck a historic deal, the Montreal-Kunming Agreement - to halt the destruction of ecosystems. 👉 https://www.cbd.int/gbf   Two years later, scientists, #IndigenousPeoples, businesses and environment ministers from nearly every country in the world are gathering together to discuss progress and negotiate how our commitments #ForNature will be strengthened and monitored.   🌿 COP16 represents a crucial turning point for global #biodiversity. As we begin negotiations at #COP29, I can’t ignore how crucial the call for real, measurable commitments to #climatefinance has become. Developing nations—facing the harshest impacts of extreme #weather and mounting pressure to shift to #cleanenergy — are still waiting for the support pledged at past COP meetings. It’s unsettling to see a gap between promises and real financial action, leaving vulnerable countries to tackle this crisis with limited resources. #Cop29 is all over the news, but this piece by Greta Thunberg hits the nail on the head: "A ‘Cop of peace’? How can authoritarian, human rights-trashing Azerbaijan possibly host that?": https://lnkd.in/eQ_JqApD Just yesterday, Freedom House published a special report, documenting how people in #NagornoKarabakh were intentionally subjected to regular attacks, intimidation, deprivation of basic rights and adequate living conditions, and forced displacement. The evidence demonstrates that the Azerbaijani state acted upon a comprehensive, methodically implemented strategy to empty Nagorno-Karabakh of its ethnic Armenian population and historical and cultural presence: https://lnkd.in/ebH3qYCD. Well, ok, #Azerbaijan is hosting COP 29, but should this go as just another checkbox event? This is an opportunity to right some wrongs, instead of going on the leash of oil and corruption.  "The climate crisis is just as much about protecting human rights as it is about protecting the climate and biodiversity. You cannot claim to care about climate justice if you ignore the sufferings of oppressed and colonised people today. We cannot pick and choose whose human rights to care for, and who to leave behind. Climate justice means justice, safety and freedom for everyone. Diplomatic pressure must also be put on the regime to release its Armenian hostages and all political prisoners – and ensure the right to a safe return for Armenians." The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29 Azerbaijan is in full swing, opening with a dynamic plenary session in the #Nizami and #Caspian plenary halls. In a historic moment, former COP28 UAE President Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber passed the presidency torch to #Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev. With the leadership officially in place, the COP29 Presidency, led by Babayev, has set a promising tone for ambitious action. #UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell addressed the assembly, underscoring the urgency and unity required in the climate negotiations ahead. #NGOs have launched side events to drive engagement, and negotiations are actively progressing with renewed energy. A significant highlight was the signing of the COP29 Declaration by President Babayev in a ceremony attended by UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, Youth Climate Champion Leyla Hasanova government leaders, and inspiringly, young people from Azerbaijan. Their presence affirmed a shared commitment to climate resilience and intergenerational equity. #COP29 has just kicked off in Baku, we well know that most of the women led and grass organizations, activists, feminists  will not be in position to attend physically and yet they have their demands that they wish to be included during the negotiations due to different factors.  However, #womenforGreenEconomyMovementUganda (WoGEMUganda) and other #Womenled #grassrootsorganizations, #Feminist in the month of July, August, September and October organized a community engagement with marginalized communities especially women that are directly affected by East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) discussing how climate change has greatly impacted them in their communities. We majored on explaining to them on simple terms what climate change is, what causes it and how we can contribute in promoting #climatemitigation and #adaptation through #locallyledsolutions. During our engagements, women shared with us that the construction of the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) has also continued to the impacts of climate change through pushing communities into #poverty, #scarcityofwater, #foodinsecurity due to loss biodiversity, flooding, drought. All these factors has increased on the carbon gas emissions that is over 1.5 degrees which is against the #Parisagreement. In this communique, we  identified on how #climatechange and #fossilfuels greatly impact marginalized women in terms of unpaid care work amidst the crisis, they further discussed the need to localize climate finance for African agenda and requested government officials, development partners to support their initiatives that could increase climate finance at grassroots level to improve their livelihoods and reduce #GenderBasedViolence (GBV) in families and communities. As global leaders, policymakers, activists and stakeholders gather for the 29th conference of the parties #COP29 in Baku to discuss and advance climate action, we the undersigned organizations and affected communities, wish to draw urgent attention to the profound impacts of the East African Crude Oil pipeline #EACOP on people, the environment and local economies across East Africa and the need to local climate finance As Africa Agenda, Here are some of our observations,     Gendered Impacts and Risks to Women’s Safety and SRHR     Environmental Degradation and Biodiversity Loss     Human Rights Violations and Displacement     Economic Hardships for Local Communities Recommendations below,     Total phase out of Fossil fuels     Protection of Human Rights and Advocacy for Fair Compensation:     Focus on Gender and SRHR in Climate Action:     More funding in the Renewable energy.     Localization of climate finance should be defined in a new collective Qualitative Goals. SAFE COP29 Azerbaijan, event; "Global Vision, Local Action: Financing the Future of Locally Led Adaptation”.“ Dipayan Dey, Chair & Founder Trustee, South Asian Forum for Environment, SAFE, highlights in the fire chat discussion; that the areas on South East India gets inundated with sea water rising or flood water, communities started practicing regenerative agriculture with slim soil technology adopting float-farms, farmers now coming back to production, and this is an adaptive innovation. As the 29th Conference of Parties (COP29) commences today in Baku, Azerbaijan, we are delighted to share that our team is represented to promote Liberia's interests; highlighting the country's challenges and spotlighting the gains we have explored. The Conference of Parties (COP) is an annual event that garthers countries that signed to the Paris Agreement in 2015 with a purpose to reduce global carbon emission and maintain a global temperature below 1.5°C. As a party, Liberia is represented yearly to contribute and, together with the rest of the world, examine the state of our world and determine actions that will meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. As part of the Liberian delegation, our team at COP29 this year are top executives who are trained to negotiate on behalf of the Liberian government.The team led by our Executive Director, Ezekiel Nyanfor, comprises Assistant Director Yundeh Alfreda Butler and Administrator Peace Karnkeh.
