I found the course "The Pathogen Genomics: A New Era in Global Health Surveillance and Strategy" by Wellcome Connecting Science Learning and Training to be very insightful. This course equipped me with the knowledge of various applications of genomics in understanding infectious disease dynamics and epidemiology surveillance. I learned that genomics was more than just a diagnostic tool. Here are some key takeaways: ✨ Whole genome sequencing (WGS) can be used to monitor resistance against multiple microbes in parallel, helping differentiate AMR evolution versus spread. ✨ The concept of pathogen X is useful in monitoring unknown microbes and help in pandemic preparedness. ✨ Researchers would benefit from more education about the policymaking process, as this will help them to target their communication with policy stakeholders in a way that is more likely to produce the desired uptakes of their research data. The impact of genomics data is far reaching and the possibilities are endless when we can apply our research. I enjoyed learning from all the tutors who shared their knowledge and experience in the field. Thank you Wellcome Connecting Science Learning and Training for providing such a useful resource. I'm eager to apply my newfound knowledge and skills. If you're interested in collaborating or exploring opportunities, let's connect! #genomics #internship #globalhealth #surveillance #pathogengenomics #research

🚀 Exciting Milestone in My Bioinformatics Journey! 🚀 I'm incredibly excited to share that my team and I have advanced to Stage 3 of the HackBio internship program! 🌟 We’ve been given an amazing opportunity to collaborate on a project that directly impacts public health — improving the visualization and reporting of cholera outbreak data from the World Health Organization (WHO). 🦠🌍 💡 The Challenge: Our interdisciplinary team, made up of 2 AMR epidemiologists and 4 front-end bioinformaticians, is tasked with developing an intuitive, interactive R Shiny dashboard to analyze and visualize cholera outbreaks globally. This involves: 🔹 Epidemiologists: Analyzing historical data dating back to 1949, identifying trends, and creating impactful reports that highlight key metrics and insights into cholera spread and severity. 🔹 Bioinformaticians (that's us!): Using R Shiny to build a dashboard that brings these insights to life! We’re developing features like: Interactive maps and charts to visualize cholera outbreaks globally. Filters for selecting specific countries, years, and metrics. Automated reports that summarize outbreaks in real-time for any selected region. 📈 The goal? To provide decision-makers and health professionals with clear, actionable insights that help them understand and mitigate the impact of cholera outbreaks. It's an incredible chance to contribute to a cause that truly matters! This project blends epidemiology, data science, and bioinformatics to address real-world health challenges — a perfect example of why I love working in this field. Looking forward to sharing more updates as we progress! 🙌 Link in the first comment 🏵️⬇️ #HackBio #Bioinformatics #AMR #PublicHealth #DataScience #RShiny #Epidemiology #CholeraOutbreak #Teamwork #WHO

My love for epidemiology and health education is deeply rooted in the profound impact these fields have on improving public health and empowering communities. 1. Making a Difference: Both epidemiology and health education are central to public health. Epidemiology helps identify disease patterns, causes, and risk factors, providing the foundation for effective health interventions. Health education translates this knowledge into actionable information, empowering individuals and communities to make informed health decisions. The synergy between these fields ensures that my work can make a tangible difference in people's lives. 2. Intellectual Challenge: The analytical nature of epidemiology appeals to my love for solving complex problems. It requires a deep understanding of statistical methods, critical thinking, and an ability to interpret data to uncover the underlying causes of health issues. This intellectual rigor keeps me engaged and continuously learning. Health education complements this by requiring creativity and communication skills to convey complex information in an accessible and impactful way. 3. Interdisciplinary Approach: Both fields are inherently interdisciplinary. Epidemiology intersects with medicine, biology, environmental science, and statistics, while health education draws on psychology, sociology, communication, and pedagogy. This multidisciplinary nature allows me to work with a diverse range of professionals and topics, enriching my understanding and broadening my impact. 4. Practical Applications: The practical implications of epidemiology and health education are immensely fulfilling. Epidemiological research informs policies and public health strategies, while health education initiatives translate these strategies into practice, promoting healthy behaviors and preventing diseases. Seeing the direct results of my work in improved health outcomes and empowered communities is incredibly motivating. 5. Global and Local Impact: Epidemiology and health education offer opportunities to address health issues both globally and locally. Understanding and mitigating health disparities, responding to outbreaks, and promoting health equity are crucial tasks that have a far-reaching impact. This dual focus allows me to contribute to global health improvements while also addressing specific local needs. 6. Lifelong Learning and Growth: The ever-evolving nature of health threats and advancements in research and education ensures that there is always more to learn. This continuous learning environment keeps me intellectually stimulated and professionally fulfilled. My love for epidemiology and health education stems from their ability to improve public health, the intellectual and practical challenges they present, their interdisciplinary nature, their local and global impact, and the continuous opportunities for learning and growth. #epidmiology #publichealth #education
