The Ground reality of Logistics Sales Roles, an optimistic perspective. Last week i had the opportunity to travel across Raipur, Indore, Nagpur and Gondia to have an in person interraction with our clients who happen to be Rice exporters. It was an exhilarating experience, a few challenges here and there but nothing that can be overcome in the due course of time with the firm’s support and active communication with the clients. Here are a few takeaways I feel would be great for anyone who is looking forward to entering this industry and this role in particular. 1. Business Development is all about understanding what exactly your client needs and catering to these requirements via individual or collaborative efforts. How are you supposed to generate business if you dont know what your client needs? 2. Clients expect you to meet the promises you made during your interaction. Providing hassle free service to the client is of utmost importance. Do your homework on all the operational aspects of your Service. 3. Not all clients will entertain you. Rejection is a part of sales. Not everyone wants your service / product. But that doesnt mean the end of the line. Try to understand why they dont need these services or what your competitors are doing to make their services more attractive to your clientelle. 4. Record your observations. Make small notes / MoM’s ( Minutes of the meeting ). When you are done with the meeting, read these observations. They will help you understand where you stand as a sales person and how you can fine tune your pitch on the next interaction. If you didnt crack a deal this time, you might next time. 5. Empathy and Humour goes a long way. You need to understand that your clients are equally as busy as you, maybe busier. Signs of empathy and a little bit of humour during your conversation will lighten the client’s mood and help you get comfortable. Who doesnt like a casual conversation? You dont always have to talk business you know? Things can be lighter. Your clients are people from different walks of life, appreicate their work, appreciate their way of doing business, they are bound to appreciate your efforts to understand them. Always remember sales is not about getting those targets in. Its about building relationships and creating allies to collaborate and grow. Kudos to all the Business Developers out there!
