A little job market update from me. This is what I'm seeing out there across the world of design in Australia: 👉 We're still seeing most of the roles on the market across the end-to-end Product Design and Service Design space. There has - for the last year or so - been a real dip in pure User Research roles going to market, as well as a significant decrease in Content Design roles too. As the market stabilises, we anticipate a resurgence in demand here. 👉 Most of the roles on the market at the moment are at the Senior to Lead/Principal level - we're not seeing too many mid-level jobs out there, though we are seeing some of our bigger enterprise businesses investing in their grad schemes after a bit of a hiatus! 👉 Within these roles, there is a clear need for seasoned Senior ICs. Companies are seeking designers who can be on the tools, lead projects, and mentor junior members of staff. 👉 While the contract market is still busy, there is a notable tilt towards permanent positions, with a bit of downward pressure on salaries. 👉 The landscape at the leadership level remains quiet, though a lot of businesses I'm speaking with are earmarking budget for these types of hires in the new financial year. 👉 Most positively, there seems to be a shift across most verticals away from purely BAU, to new products, services (and usually CAPEX funded) projects. If you're looking to discuss your next step or looking to build out your team in the new year, get in touch! 📲 0414 636 440 📧 mike@sustaindigital.com

CEO: "We need a new website design ASAP. Can you work for us...? " - Developer: "I'm available… in August. Next year. 🤷♂️" - CEO: "Next year?! That's too late. We can't wait that long. Hey, Manager, how much would it cost to hire a full-time developer in the U.S.?" - Manager: "Well, for a top-notch developer, you're looking at $100,000 to $200,000+ per year, including salaries, benefits, and recruitment costs." - CEO: "That's a hefty investment! There has to be a more cost-effective and quicker solution. What do we do?" - Manager: "Ever heard of nearshoring? We can hire top-tier developers from LATAM... for maybe the half of the costs." And it's because of conversations like this that hiring remotely from LATAM has become such a popular option for U.S. companies to fill tech and marketing roles ✨

Let’s talk about another Mistake I see people make when transitioning from done-for-you (DFY) services to a more done-with-you (DWY) model—: 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬. This Client (Client no. 2) launched their DWY offer, bringing in 8 clients & generating over $18,000. Now, they’re delivering on this, but I advised them to keep selling DWY services, as they had originally planned. However, they were tempted to take on five additional DFY clients at $3,000 per month each, in a video marketing business. While it seemed like an easy sale, This approach required hiring & training 2 more video editors & dedicating an additional 8 hours to onboarding calls— 𝘈𝘭𝘭 while handling existing DFY clients. I asked them to envision where they wanted to be in six months, “𝘍𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨” they said. With that in mind, I suggested they could achieve the same revenue by securing just 3 more DWY clients at a higher price point. Avoiding the extra hours & overhead. They realized that by slightly shifting their pricing & client load, They could maintain their current group model structure (two 90-minute calls weekly) While increasing capacity to serve 10 to 20 clients monthly without additional hiring or workload. By reframing their approach, they saw how easily they could expand their DWY client base instead of adding more DFY clients & jeopardizing bandwidth. The lesson here is not to continue operating as you have, hoping it will get you to the future business you want. 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐡— Determine how many new-model clients you need to replace old-model clients. Focus your time & energy on this new direction. 📸 : Chilling in Istanbul

TL;DR: Moving to Zürich, Switzerland. Looking for job opportunities as a Software Engineering Manager there (or remote). Hello friends! After 5 awesome years in Singapore, I have decided it is time for me to move on and find a place where I can feel more at home. So, in 2025, I am moving to Zürich, Switzerland. Given my current company (SmartNews) cannot support this transition, I am officially open to work opportunities that are either remote, or in Switzerland. If you have a connection that is looking for someone with my qualifications, please feel free to put us in touch! Here is what I am looking for: Position - Software Engineering Manager My expertise is mostly in Mobile and Infrastructure, with a focus on Developer Experience and Release Engineering tooling, but I’m open to new challenges as well. The main things I’m good at and that I enjoy doing: People Manager - building teams, recruiting, setting the right principles and working culture, and ensuring proper growth for each individual Technical Leadership - building a vision, defining the strategy, and putting in the right processes for a predictable and agile execution Product Ownership - understand the market, define the product requirements, experiment, and make data-driven decisions Working arrangement - Fully remote or Hybrid I am a big fan of in-person collaboration, but I also value the flexibility of working remotely. I have over five years of experience in hybrid or remote setups with a great track record, so I know I can build remote teams that are very effective and cohesive. I am open to traveling for work and being flexible with my working hours to accommodate other timezones, within reasonable limits. Company - A mission I believe in This is highly subjective, but what I can say is that, for example, I have a really good sense of purpose at SmartNews, where we focus on delivering quality and truthful information to those who need it. Misinformation is probably one of the biggest problems of the modern era, so I do feel strongly about this, which keeps me motivated and engaged in the work I put in every day. With this in mind, I am generally flexible about the industry of my future company, though would prefer it to have a positive impact in the world. I’m happy to provide a deeper insight into my experience and the measurable impact that I brought in my 10 years of working experience; just reach out with an opportunity! Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you, Mihai
