Scrapping of No-Detention Policy 23,502 students in Gujarat repeated a year in class 5 and class 8 in one year Suresh, a Class 5 student in a Sgovernment school, failed to do a simple addition of 70+15 in the exam, despite having learnt this in the previous standard. After Gujarat decided to do away with the no-detention policy from 2023, he was among other academ- ically weak students who were given a chance to appear in the re-exam. However, he failed this too and had to repeat Class 5. According to Gujarat education department officials, 23,502 students in Class 5 and Class 8 in government, grant-in-aid, social and tribal welfare department, and private schools had to repeat a year in school. This is the first year of the educa- tion department’s move to scrap the no-detention policy. The no-deten- tion policy, part of the Right to Education Act, allowed students to go to the next standard without an eval- uation until Class 8.
