The DC Coalition on Long Term Care is hosting the 2024 State of the Workforce Symposium to address the critical crisis in the long term care workforce. Home health aides and certified nursing assistants play a vital role in caring for our most vulnerable family members and neighbors. In DC, this crisis is exacerbated by low pay, high costs, and a shortage of training schools. These dedicated workers are essential for residents aging in place and for essential tasks in hospitals. Council member Christina Henderson, along with other stakeholders and residents, invite you to join the dialogue on December 11 from 12-2:00 pm. This symposium aims to discuss solutions to the challenges faced by the long term care workforce. Nurses and nursing home administrators can earn CEUs by participating in this event. More #TRECResearch: Understanding Adaptive Leadership in the Context of Nursing Homes Rapidly growing populations of older adults rely heavily on formal long-term care services such as those provided in nursing homes. Nursing home staff are confronted with complex challenges. We explored how staff, particularly care aides, interpreted challenges and responded to them by taking adaptive leadership roles, and engaging in technical and adaptive work in nursing homes. We conducted analysis of the ethnographic case studies. In long-term care settings, staff face complex challenges in improving resident care due to contextual barriers. These include demanding work conditions and inadequate resources. Additionally, top-down communications, despite being well-intentioned, often lead to misinterpretation and a lack of staff motivation. Nonetheless, we found that certain staff managed to overcome these contextual barriers and effectively execute change initiatives by assuming adaptive leadership roles. Formal leaders have a vital role in empowering staff, including care aides, and facilitating their adaptive leadership behaviors. Dr. Trepanier, a trailblazer in healthcare, has been instrumental in piloting virtual nursing at Providence—an initiative that has not only improved patient outcomes but also provided much-needed support to our dedicated nurses. But what truly resonated with me was his emphasis on work-life balance. As leaders, we often find ourselves caught up in the relentless demands of our roles, but Dr. Trepanier's approach is refreshingly different. He shared that when he’s on vacation, he removes his work email. This simple yet powerful act sends a clear message: trust in your team, and lead by example by taking the time to recharge. It’s a practice that I find incredibly inspiring, especially as the CNO of NPHub. Leadership isn’t just about driving results; it’s about creating a culture where your team feels empowered and supported.
