In 2022, South Africa had one of the highest incidences of TB globally. An estimated 60% of new TB cases in SA are in persons with HIV. Drug-Induced Liver Injury (DILI) is the most common severe adverse drug reaction (ADR) of anti-tuberculous therapy. These factors contribute to the risk of anti-tuberculous drug-induced liver injury For detailed guidance on managing DILI in individuals with HIV undergoing tuberculosis treatment, please refer to/download the new comprehensive guideline: https://lnkd.in/d2_2Q-hB #TB #HIV #HealthcareProfessionals #ClinicalCare #ChangingLives

🌍 World AIDS Day: A Call to Action 🌍 On this World AIDS Day, GAFFI recognizes the tremendous progress made in controlling, diagnosing, and treating HIV. However, we cannot ignore the harsh reality: people with advanced HIV still face alarmingly high mortality rates. Fungal Disease is the leading cause of these deaths, with cryptococcal meningitis, disseminated histoplasmosis, talaromycosis, and Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia being the primary culprits. The main barrier? Lack of access to diagnostics in many countries, especially in LMICs. This forces healthcare providers to treat blindly, often missing the true condition affecting the patient. After all, medicine without diagnosis is witchcraft. We have the tools to change this. Diagnostic techniques for these infections are commercially available, effective, and proven to work. What we need now is a technology transfer from HICs to LMICs to ensure global access to these life-saving diagnostics. 🌟 No one should die due to lack of diagnosis. Help us make it happen. #WorldAIDSDay #FungalDisease #Diagnostics #GlobalHealth #GAFFI #HIV #FungalAI #FundFungalSolutions #ThinkFungalPatients #UnburdenFungalImpact #GlobalFungalCare

I am honored to have contributed to the inaugural meeting of the Regional Validation Advisory Group (RVAG) on Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission (EMTCT) of HIV, Hepatitis B, and Syphilis, and Accelerated Control of Viral Hepatitis in the Western Pacific Region of the World Health Organization . 📊The Western Pacific Region bears a significant burden of #hepatitis, with 115 million people living with chronic hepatitis B and C. Additionally, over 1.9 million people live with #HIV, and #syphilis remains a major public health concern. 🗓️The RVAG, which convened from 21 to 23 May 2024 in Manila, Philippines, plays a crucial role in advising, validating, and accelerating regional and national efforts to eliminate these diseases. This ensures that Member States move closer to global #elimination #targets and a healthier future for all by 2030. 🎯Engaging in these vital discussions with dedicated experts and colleagues was a privilege. “The elimination targets are ambitious, but achievable!” #PublicHealth #WHO #ViralHepatitis #HIV #HepatitisB #Syphilis #GlobalHealth #SDG #WPRO #EliminationGoals

The 25th International #AIDS Conference was held in #Munich, #Germany between July 22-26. Held every two years, the event brings together the #knowledge and #experience of not only #scientists, #healthprofessionals and #policymakers, but people living with #HIV as well as funders in order to collectively find ways to strengthen #policies and programs to combat HIV worldwide, informed by the latest #medical #advances. According to the latest data from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (#UNAIDS), nearly 40 million people were living with HIV in 2023. Since the start of the #epidemic four years ago, UNAIDS estimates that around 88.4 million people have been #infected with HIV worldwide and an estimated 42.3 million people have died of AIDS. The #WHO #African region continues to be the most severely affected, with nearly 1 in every 25 adults living with HIV. Saying that, last year it was outside of the sub-#Saharan region that the majority of new infections took place, highlighting the progress made in many African countries in tackling the #disease. Between 2010 and 2022, the biggest increases in infections were in Eastern #Europe and Central #Asia, the #MiddleEast and North Africa as well as #LatinAmerica. As the following chart based on data from the #WorldHealthOrganization shows, a growing number of people infected with HIV are being treated worldwide. At the end of 2022, approximately 30 million people had access to #antiretroviral #treatment, an increase of more than 20 million since 2010. Thanks to advances in #HIVtherapies, people living with the disease who have access to the right treatment and care can now have a #lifeexpectancy similar to an HIV-negative person. The effectiveness of these treatments allows patients with an undetectable #viralload not to #transmit the #virus and there is now also a treatment (pre-exposure #prophylaxis, or #PrEP) that prevents HIV-negative people from becoming infected with the #AIDSvirus. https://lnkd.in/g2rYS9vW

People living with HIV (#PLHIV) have a higher risk for non-communicable diseases (#NCDs) than those without HIV, including: · A two-fold increased risk of #cardiovasculardisease · Two times the likelihood of #depression · A higher risk of #type2diabetes · A higher risk of certain cancers, including #lymphoma and #cervicalcancer On #WorldAIDSDay, I invite you to explore a collection of 10 stories by PLHIV and NCDs. Through Viatris’ partnership with the NCD Alliance, this initiative highlights diverse, first-hand experiences of the barriers people face in managing conditions and accessing care. #HumanImmunodeficiencyVirus (HIV) poses a significant global health challenge, leading to severe immune system damage and ultimately AIDS if untreated. Early detection is crucial for effective management and treatment. The HIV p24 Antigen Test Cassette (Whole Blood/Serum/Plasma) is designed for the in vitro detection of the p24 antigen associated with HIV type 1. This test provides rapid results, aiding in the differential diagnosis of HIV infections within minutes, making it an essential tool for healthcare providers. Its versatility allows it to be used with whole blood, serum or plasma, ensuring accessibility in various clinical settings. In summary, this test plays a vital role in early HIV detection and management, ultimately improving patient outcomes and public health efforts. 🔎https://lnkd.in/gAt7yG9F #HIV #HIVDetection #PublicHealth #AIDS #HealthCare #RapidTest #MedicalInnovation #GlobalHealth #InVitroDiagnosis #AllTest #Innovation

#PublishedToday | “The 2️⃣ worst global health problems have combined forces well. But the institutions addressing them have miserably failed to put their act together,” wrote Dr Tim France, a noted global health thought leader, in an op-ed article titled “The chasm between TB and HIV” which was widely published in several newspapers of high TB burden countries in Asia Pacific and Africa in 2006. Even after 18 years, his words remain deeply relevant. Eamonn Murphy, Director, UNAIDS Asia Pacific and UNAIDS Eastern Europe and Central Asia, opened his keynote address in the End TB Dialogues Summit held recently, underlining the importance of bringing TB and HIV services together and strikingly called upon the dire need to ‘break the silos’ – a clarion call which Dr France had also unequivocally given through his op-ed of almost two decades back! “Many of the [TB and HIV] programmes are operating in isolation and almost in conflict with each other and it is not helping the patients [co-infected with TB and HIV] we all serve. There are many missed opportunities for HIV and TB service access in Asia Pacific” said Eamonn. 🔷 Central Chronicle, India (op-ed page, 5th April 2024) https://lnkd.in/gkwPWTYG 🔷 CNS https://lnkd.in/gAQNuXCh #healthforall #Integratedhealth #TBHIV #endTB #TB #HIV #AIDS #endAIDS #YesWeCanEndTB #FindAllTB #treatalltb #preventalltb #undetectableequalsuntransmittable #UequalsU #WorldHealthDay #WHD2024 #WorldHealthDay2024
