Did you know these 6 facts about the Buffalo? • The hump of a Buffalo is composed of strong muscles that assist this larger-than-life mammal in running. • The muscles help the Buffalo's front legs reach out farther, providing a longer and more efficient running stride. • The hump also supports the Buffalo’s very large head. • The hair or fur on the Buffalo’s head, shoulders, and front legs is crucial for their survival. The thick fur on the front end keeps flies and other biting insects away as the fur and skin are too thick for them to penetrate. • The tail and back legs achieve the same protective function at the back end. • The Buffalo's short, thinner hair at the hind end helps keep these larger-than-life relatives cool during hot, shadeless prairie days. The Wirral Barn Owl Trust, founded in 1999, works to protect the declining barn owl population on the Wirral peninsula. After rising to 42 pairs by 2012, numbers have fallen again to 13 pairs, threatened by habitat loss and severe weather. Relying solely on donations, the Trust’s conservation efforts include installing nest boxes, monitoring owl activity, collaborating with farmers, and educating the public to secure a sustainable future for these iconic birds. In the latest round of Grants for Good, Wirral Barn Owl Trust has been granted £3,500 from John Good Group | Growing Businesses Together to help the charity with their current goal of replacing 25 damaged nest boxes with weather-resistant, eco-friendly boxes. Thank you to the JCSC team for your dedication to environmental stewardship. Your passion inspires us to do our part for the planet, which is why our team will once again be volunteering with Junction Creek in 2025. Environmental nonprofits like the JCSC often face significant funding challenges. Compared to sectors like health or education, they receive fewer charitable donations and less corporate/government funding. Many grants are also short-term or project-based, making it harder to sustain ongoing research and conservation efforts.
