𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 The book 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, edited by Marco Keiner, offers a thought-provoking exploration of sustainability from diverse perspectives. Drawing on contributions from experts like 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁, 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗹𝘆, and 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗹, the book challenges conventional notions of sustainable development while proposing actionable pathways for the future. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸: 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗽. 3): Sustainability is often misinterpreted as a politically convenient term, masking real conflicts of interest. The book argues for clarity and accountability in its application, emphasizing that true sustainability involves 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿-𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 and 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮-𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 equity. 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗽. 69): Urbanization is central to sustainability debates, with over 80% of urban growth projected to occur in developing countries by 2030. The book highlights the need for urban planning that aligns with ecological limits while addressing 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗼-𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 disparities. 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗽. 193): Mathis Wackernagel’s discussion on ecological footprint accounting underscores the urgent need to balance human demands with Earth's biological capacity. This tool is presented as essential for setting realistic sustainability targets. 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 (𝗽. 117): Klaus Leisinger examines the tension between economic globalization and sustainability, advocating for corporate responsibility to uphold human rights and equitable resource distribution. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗽. 179): Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker introduces the “𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿” concept, calling for a fourfold increase in resource productivity through technological innovation and policy reforms. This book serves as a crucial reminder that 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 is not just an ideal but a necessity for the 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. By addressing challenges across environmental, social, and economic dimensions, it provides a roadmap for creating resilient systems. The insights resonate deeply with Sheher Saaz Private Limited’s mission to integrate sustainability into urban planning and development, fostering a future where communities and ecosystems thrive together. #SustainableFuture #UrbanPlanning #EcologicalBalance #ClimateAction #SustainabilityMatters #GreenInnovation #CorporateResponsibility #SustainableCities #SheherSaaz UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) SustainabilityLeader Group Khurram Farid Bargatt Aamir Latif, Ph.D, MIEnvSc Omar Alhusaini UN Sustainable Development Group UNDP UN Climate Change

Our latest findings from the 2024 Urban Benchmark show that many companies are still in the early stages of measuring their impact on people and the environment. Even companies that have made progress in setting up policies often fall short in evaluating the true outcomes of these policies. For example, companies had slightly better scores in areas like setting up policies and processes. However, they score really low (4%) when it comes to measuring the outcomes of these efforts, like reducing negative impacts or increasing positive ones. Intentions are good. However, to measure real progress, companies must step up and disclose the results of their sustainability initiatives, focusing on transparent reporting that reflects their impact on both people and the environment. Investment in cultural facilities can be transformational within communities, and not just through the services they provide, the jobs they create, or the money channeled into the local economy. Cultural facilities can have tangible impacts on a community’s built environment and energy systems. The arts and cultural sector is experiencing a significant increase in sustainability work, with a number of organizations beginning to measure and report impact, incorporate sustainability into values, or work toward positive climate goals (Environment and Energy Leader 2024). This work often centers around facilities’ improvements with obvious impacts at an organizational level, typically reducing emissions, lowering energy bills, and improving aesthetics. However, this investment in facilities also likely contributes to sustainable development at a community level and beyond.

Metabolic became 12 years old last week! It's been quite a ride :) An important part of the work we've done in the past 12 years revolves around applying systems thinking and analytical methods from academic fields like #industrialecology and #environmentalsciences in practice, in our consulting work. So, we celebrated our twelfth birthday in style with an article on one of our key analytical methodologies: material flow analysis (MFA). By mapping the flow of materials, energy, and water, we uncover the most impactful opportunities for circular solutions and sustainable development. We have used MFAs to: - Help cities like Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Charlotte develop circular economy policies and strategies. - Applied it to urban masterplans to enable architects and planners to take into account resource flows and emissions when developing new, sustainable neighborhoods. - And applied it on a regional scale to facilitate collaboration, innovation, and resource exchange between different industries! Perhaps one of the bigger, less visible impacts of the work we've done in the past 12 years, lies in introducing these 'new' methodologies to a broader group of clients, and colleague research- engineering- planning and consulting firms working on sustainability transitions. If we all start to think in stocks & flows, in emissions, hidden impacts, and in complex systems, then the change in perspective will hopefully also change the way we develop our cities and neighborhoods for the better! In order to reach impact, beyond projects - scaling is a vital mechanism. This is of strategic importance both for Viable Cities and for Driving Urban Transitions Partnership What’s your take on this?
In a thought-provoking article from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the concept of “The Generous City” challenges us to rethink urban development. It’s not just about reducing harm; it’s about actively doing good. By integrating principles of the circular economy, cities can transform from major carbon emitters into ecosystems that enhance both human and environmental health. From biomimicry to ecosystem thinking, this shift towards regenerative design promises cities that not only thrive but nourish. At UNSSC, we discussed how we can implement these visionary ideas in our urban landscapes.
