Our Corporate Marketing & Communications, Research and Project Leaders recently came together to partner with Property Industry Foundation to help restore one of the Salvation Army's transitional housing centres. These centres provide young people experiencing homelessness short term housing solutions as they seek support to create long-term living arrangements. The team used their 'Colliers Gives' leave day to support PIF on this project with their volunteering efforts helping to provide a safer, more welcoming environment for young people in need. Doing what's right by our communities is part of our unique Colliers values and culture. #ColliersAustralia #ColliersGives #PropertyIndustryFoundation

Q Shelter has responded to the recent decision made by City of Moreton Bay council regarding people living in public spaces. In the statement, Q Shelter Acting CEO Jackson Hills said "We would hope that City of Moreton Bay has exhausted all options in working with the community services sector and housing and homelessness networks to assist with housing support challenges for people sleeping in public spaces, particularly for those with companion animals before punitive measures are being applied. "This latest development just highlights the severity of the deepening crisis we face not just now, but in the years to come, and we must work together to solve this community challenge.” You can read our statement in full on the Q Shelter website: https://bit.ly/3P3fJgF

How can Love change the way we see the world ? Every so often something comes along that reignites a love for what you do, recently our team was able to contribute to a Big conversation in a Little way. Colony 47 came to GHD with an idea to help solve Youth Homelessness in Tasmania through the potential purchase of the Fountainside Hotel. Whilst recognising that a not-for-profit provider would struggle to be economically competitive in the Expression of Interest process for this property, Colony 47’s Dianne Underwood and Angela Abbott were keen to try to find a way for stakeholders and decision makers to see things differently. Introduced by Bill Lawson, founder of the Beacon Foundation, the GHD Future Communities' Loveable team; myself, Andrew Smith and Michala Lander helped put together a submission to support the prospectus. Our work told a different story than most, where this place was one that could change lives. It’s not just a room and shelter…. instead it’s a space that fosters a sense of belonging, connectedness and hope. It’s an opportunity to co-design a space with care, sensitivity, sustainability, and respect. A place that functions as a place of healing, kindness, wellbeing, and transformation. This work supports Colony 47 to pursue some of their aspirational strategic goals in delivering on their purpose to end youth homelessness and building a better future for young Tasmanians. It has enabled them to confidently have strategic discussions with key stakeholders who can provide capital funding, the response from the Tasmanian Community has also been very supportive. Maybe Love can change how we see the world ? #futurecommunities #loveable #Colony47

Can affordable housing transform declining neighborhoods? One organization believes it can—and it’s already doing so. Based in San Angelo, Texas, Galilee is a not-for-profit organization providing affordable housing options for residents on low to moderate incomes. Stephanie Hamby, MPA, Executive Director of Galilee CDC, and Carlos Cruz, Rehabilitation Manager, discuss the organization's impact on affordable housing and homelessness, focusing on community engagement and partnerships. "With the category of 18-to-30-year-olds leaving school or the foster care system, these individuals are susceptible to homelessness or ‘couch surfing’, but by thinking upstream, we can provide good quality, affordable apartments to combat these potential issues." Read the full insight into Galilee here: 🔗https://ow.ly/FubU50TE4ct #AffordableHousing #AffordableLiving #GalileeCDC #MHBmagazine

Today SCOTUS struck down the Grants Pass case regarding homelessness and public camping. They found that it was not cruel and unusual to criminalize homelessness. This is not the decision we wanted… But here’s the thing… Regardless of the SCOTUS decision we know housing solves homelessness. SCOTUS does not build housing or provide supportive services, communities do. And when communities come together to solve tough issues, we move forward not leaving anyone behind. Don’t let this decision discourage you. Lean in to the abundance we can create and keep beating the drum of housing solves homelessness. We can and are already doing the great work. I am proud of the steps we are taking locally here in Kansas and around the country. We are the movement. We are the people power. We can and will do this. We do not have to take homelessness into our future. We must make the case in our communities. We must build our choir of champions. We must be strategic and proactive with our policy and programming. We must get everyone into our collective future of abundance! #housingsolveshomelessness #grantspass #scotus #strategiccasemaking

November 22 is National Housing Day Housing is a basic human need, yet too many Canadians face housing insecurity or homelessness. On National Housing Day, we unite to raise awareness and work toward solutions for safe and affordable housing for everyone. At Greener Village, we see how housing costs impact food security and the ability to prepare nutritious meals. That’s why we’re proud to partner with The 12Neighbours Community Inc., a community organization providing permanent housing, developmental support, and employment opportunities to those experiencing homelessness. Each month, we deliver food boxes to help support their residents. Solving the housing crisis requires an all-hands-on-deck approach—governments, businesses, nonprofits, and communities working together to create impactful change. Together, we can build a brighter future for everyone. Let’s make housing a priority this National Housing Day. #NationalHousingDay #HousingFirst #EndHomelessness #GreenerVillage #12Neighbours #FoodInsecurity

Did you know that last year the whole of Belfast was either threatened with homelessness or already homeless? Seriously, the whole of Belfast… OK, not actually Belfast – but 324,990 households in the UK, which is about the same size as Belfast. That’s half a Glasgow, most of a Cardiff, most of a Croydon, 70% of a Leicester, nearly 2 Readings, 2 Cheltenhams, or 141 Chalfont-St-Giles’s… A whole Belfast is owed a duty – meaning their local authority must help, prevent, or relieve homelessness. That could mean finding Temporary Accommodation… but there’s already a full Rotherham in Temporary Accommodation! From March 2023 to March 2024, these figures have increased by 92% year on year. We work with our member London boroughs to find secure, safe, affordable, and good quality homes for households in Temporary Accommodation. But we need a cross-departmental national strategy for Temporary Accommodation and Homelessness, because if we see another 92% increase… We’re going for a full Manchester… #HomelessnessCrisis #UKHousing #TemporaryAccommodation #SocialImpact #AffordableHousing #HomelessnessAwareness #HousingCrisis #SupportLocal #CommunityCare #LinkedInCommunity

Our plan creates an affordable housing system that will end chronic homelessness and preserves everyone’s right to decent housing. We do this by: ◦ Keeping affordable housing affordable through a rental protection fund that will preserve existing homes and support the acquisition of new ones. ◦ Building more affordable housing made possible with additional funding. ◦ Helping communities provide long-term support to address their local homelessness challenges; and ◦ Supporting our most vulnerable who are living in encampments or are in unhoused transition to a dignified housing solution. Actions = Results! Together, we are building stronger communities
