What if you were homeless? Would you feel safer going it alone or finding a group of people that can have your back? Well, that's what I see when I see the homeless encampments. I see people who have bonded over a commonality of homelessness and have created a community that watches out for each other. Just like you might have in your neighborhood today. So, when we step into their encampment, seeking to save them from where they feel safe with the community they have created, I think we need to approach helping them in a different way. I think they'd prefer to be relocated together, with as much of their belongings as possible, to a clean place they can call home even if it's a safe tent parking lot, camp ground or other spot designated by the City as authorized for outdoor camping. When we go in and throw away their life possessions that's not being compassionate or environmentally-conscious. When we break up their social connections and bring them back into a sense of isolation and deprivation, we are creating more trauma and problems for them. As San Diego City and County staff act on the CA state order to remove encampments, ensure you have a plan to relocate these individuals as a group so they can maintain their sense of community unless they are known to commit crimes or need serious medical attention. Those experiencing homelessness are human beings that have adapted to their circumstances and have found a way to survive. Help them find better housing and assistance but don't destroy their community. It's all most of them have left.

What does homelessness really look like in Australia? While we often think of people sleeping rough or living in cars, many more are experiencing hidden homelessness. For thousands of Australian families, homelessness means living in emergency motels, shelters, or refuges. Some are fleeing domestic violence, while others have been forced out of stable housing by rising rents and the soaring cost of living. 475 families in Brisbane alone are now facing this harsh reality, and countless more around the country need our help. Max is part of Orange Sky’s Pick Up Program, which brings clean laundry and connection to families in crisis motels and refuges. For many, these accommodations don’t have laundry facilities, and families are doing their best under tough conditions. Max often meets single mothers trying to hold it all together, with kids sleeping on couches and limited ways to wash clothes, towels or bedding. These families may be out of sight, but they’re struggling with isolation, loss of stability, and the daily challenge of keeping their clothes clean and fresh. This holiday season, you can give more than just clean laundry. Your gift brings dignity, connection, and hope to families like these, who deserve to feel seen and valued. Please, give a little to help a load this holiday season: https://bit.ly/4fft2WE

Bedford Winter Night Shelter 2024 - home for tonight, hope for tomorrow. Homelessness in the UK has reached a critical breaking point, with rough sleeping surging by 27% in 2023 and a shocking 60% since 2021. This crisis is not just a statistic; it’s a human tragedy, and a stark reminder that our nation’s safety nets are unraveling. [Source: Shelter, 2023] On 1st December 2023, we opened our doors to the homeless in Bedford becoming a vital refuge during the harsh winter months. Over a four month period, the shelter served 2500 warm meals and offered 1250 safe bed spaces to those who would have otherwise faced the cold. On December 2nd 2024, we are opening our doors one again. We are committed to providing shelter, support, and hope to our guests for 100 days with particular focus on long term wrap-around support. This vital initiative is made possible through our partnership with Bedford Borough Council, together transforming lives and ensuring that no one in our community has to endure the winter nights, alone. With the learnings and experience of last year, we saw how providing a bed and a warm meal was not just a basic necessity, but a crucial step to transforming the lives of the homeless, displaced and isolated in Bedford. We’re determined for the Bedford Winter Night Shelter not to offer temporary solutions, but long-lasting change and with your support can turn this vision into reality. Help us create a place that is more than a shelter; help us build a community that gives hope for tomorrow. ❗ Action Alert ❗ The Bowser administration is about to terminate the housing subsidy of 2,000 families for hitting a new, strict time limit in rapid re-housing—to “right-size” the program. You can learn more about what is happening: https://lnkd.in/eJeuWJ7d Virtually none of these families will be able to afford the rent after being terminated, and will face eviction and a likely return to homelessness. There isn’t enough eviction prevention $$ or family shelter to provide a safety net for these families after such a mass displacement. Here are a few ways you can help stop this harm to DC residents: ✅ Send a one-click email to the Council: https://lnkd.in/eivyhJS4 ✅ If you testify at the budget hearing on 5/3 or speak with Councilmembers or staff, raise this issue as a priority ✅ Share the email action with your networks

According to Shelter's latest data, homelessness in England has risen by 14% in just one year. Over 354,000 people are now homeless, including 161,500 children who will face this winter without a stable home. At Beam and with our partners, we see the devastating impact of this crisis every day and even more so in the lead up to Christmas. These numbers aren’t inevitable, and they reflect a system that needs urgent change. There is no silver bullet, but there are a few key areas that we hear from our council partners and the clients we serve that would help alleviate the pressures: 1️⃣ Build more genuinely affordable homes to address the housing shortage. 2️⃣ Provide human-centred, long-term support for homeless individuals and families, ensuring they can rebuild their lives with security and dignity. 3️⃣ Strengthen safety nets to help prevent homelessness before it happens. 🤝 Collaboration across the sector is key to help provide lasting change.

A major talking point we hear is "affordable housing" coinciding with the rise in homelessness in many communities across the country, and here in #Tulsa is no exception. Jeff Jaynes writes a thoughtful piece about the need for not just affordable housing, but emergency rent assistance to prevent a rise in homelessness.
The need for housing, specifically affordable housing, is paramount in communities across America, including Tulsa. The need for Emergency Rental Assistance funds is critical now to help address housing instability and preventing a rise in homelessness across our community. Executive Director, Jeff Jaynes, shares his thoughts in this Op-Ed in the Tulsa World Media Company https://bit.ly/40Zmes7 #Hope #RestoreHope #AffordableHousing #EmergencyRentAssistance

Steppingstone, Incorporated is proud to announce that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities, Division of Housing and Stabilization, has awarded a one-time grant of $426,443.53 to expand shelter capacity for unhoused individuals this winter. This funding will provide critical services and secure accommodations at the Dartmouth Motor Inn and the Capri Motel, offering essential support during the harsh winter months. To address the overflow of unhoused individuals in Fall River, the grant designates $144,230 to secure 10 rooms at the Capri Motel in Dartmouth, accommodating up to 20 people daily for 17 weeks. Each room will be double-occupied by compatible individuals and include supportive services and daily meals. Additionally, $282,214 will fund 18 rooms at the Dartmouth Motor Inn, offering shelter to up to 36 individuals daily from the Bristol County Continuum of Care, which includes New Bedford, Taunton, and Attleboro. Residents will receive outreach services, supportive care, and daily meals. The growing challenge of homelessness, exacerbated by the cold weather and increasing rents, has created a critical need for additional resources. Despite existing shelter and overflow systems in Fall River and surrounding cities, this funding enables Steppingstone to assist the City of Fall River and the Bristol County Continuum of Care in providing safe shelter and meals to up to 56 individuals each winter day. Kathleen Schedler Clark, Executive Director of Steppingstone, shared her thoughts on this vital initiative: "We are honored to step forward and provide shelter and support to those experiencing homelessness, whether due to rising rents or other challenges. This funding allows us to offer a warm and safe place for individuals who have nowhere else to go this winter." Steppingstone, Incorporated is grateful to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for this opportunity to expand services and to play a vital role in supporting those most in need this winter. #Steppingstone #FundingForGood #CommunitySupport
