I’ve been deeply loyal to AT&T for years, but I can’t help but feel that the company began losing its way around 2012-2014. Historically, AT&T excelled as a communications and network leader, mastering the core infrastructure that powered everything. However, since the decline of their streaming and satellite ventures, it’s unclear where their focus truly lies. Imagine the impact if AT&T had doubled down on connectivity—expanding access to rural areas, enhancing FirstNet, or advancing innovations like open RAN-DAS. Seeing what CommScope has achieved with Verizon, especially an idea we discussed at AT&T back in 2012, highlights what could have been. Now this is interesting development re: convergence of mobile and cable tech. ….“The idea is to overlay 5G on the coax.” That approach would also enable cable operators to take advantage of legacy HFC assets such as power and backhaul. The general idea would be to run 5G as an overlay on HFC in spectrum above 1.2GHz – on up to 4GHz or 5GHz. DOCSIS would continue operate at 1.2GHz and below. As a possible alternative to a distributed access architecture (DAA) that would pair a remote PHY device with a virtual cable modem termination system (vCMTS), the NRoC approach could match a traditional, integrated CMTS with a 5G radio deployed where a DAA node would typically be located.”

#TechNews: Southern Cross, Ciena claim first 1Tb/s transpacific cable link Southern Cross Cables Limited claims to have connected the world’s first transpacific 1 terabits per second (Tb/s) single-carrier wavelength over the world’s longest single optical submarine cable segment. The company achieved 1Tb/s data transfer speeds across a 13,500km live production network with Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) solution. The channel speed ran error-free on a network between Sydney and Los Angeles, leveraging Ciena’s WL6es to achieve end-to-end connectivity across a higher capacity wavelength, using far less space and power.
