🌲Forest extension services empower land stewards and forest professionals with tools and knowledge to manage forestlands effectively 🌿 Recently, the University of New Brunswick hosted an exciting Forest Extension Summit, led by Dr. Tom Beckley of the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management. This event explored opportunities to develop a new forest extension program tailored to New Brunswick's unique needs. 🪓 Community Forests, alongside ACFOR Ltd., participated as speakers in the summit and presented our research and proposal for a forest extension program in NB. The summit included presentations from different professionals across Canada and the US, and left us with great connections and lessons learned about possible models for adoption here. Here are a few takeaways from the presentations: 1. An essential step in the development of forest extension services is clearly identifying the problems, so that we can design the right solutions. 2. There are many people who can make a management plan that focuses on ecological forest stewardship, but there are not many people who can implement such a thing. There is a knowledge gap on both sides, among both forest professionals and land stewards. 3. In NB, we already have a variety of organizations focusing on different issues and with different expertise. A key element in a forest extension program is having an impartial stakeholder who oversees program administration. So who who would best fill that role? 4. There are more than 40,000 private landowners in NB, including family forest owners, land trusts, and Indigenous land holding groups, each with various goals and interests for their forests. We need to improve communications and and connections with all of these land stewards to create a program that will be helpful and valuable to the different type of landowners. What do you think are the biggest needs that land stewards have? What do you most need support with? #forestry #forests #newbrusnwick #forestprotection

Early last year, we renewed our provincial agreements to further our commitment to sustainable forestry practices and the responsible management of public lands. The first agreement, our 10-year Sustainable Forest Management and Outreach agreement, was extended until 2033. This ensures that our forestry practices align with current ecological objectives, supporting initiatives like those on private woodlots. Additionally, our long-term forest utilization license agreement has been extended to 2043. At Port Hawkesbury Paper, we're dedicated to sustainable forestry that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship. #PortHawkesburyPaper #SustainableForestry #EnvironmentalStewardship #NovaScotiaEconomy

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT 📣 PAW Webinar on May 31, 2024: Developing Effective Urban Tree Regulations on Private Property Urban forests are complex regional, and watershed-scale natural systems located across natural areas, parks, public spaces, private residential and commercial properties, and transportation corridors. As development increases across Washington State, so does the need to protect and maintain our urban and community forests and the valuable ecosystem services they provide. Tree codes are a valuable tool in retaining, replacing, and protecting trees - particularly during development. Because tree codes and ordinances are developed at the local level, these regulations can vary across jurisdictions. To date, little guidance or data exists to inform the tree ordinance update process for local governments. In this webinar, the Facet planning and urban forestry team will introduce the Guide for Developing Effective Urban Tree Regulations on Private Property – which Facet developed with the King County Land and Water Resources Division’s Urban Forestry Program. We will present key elements to include in tree regulations, best practices to consider during the ordinance update process, and discuss various levels of tree codes applicable to cities statewide. 📢 Big News: NEFF Awarded $4.3 Million Grant to Help Maine's Oldest Forests Store More Carbon 🌳 Marking a transformative investment in northern New England’s forests, the U.S. Forest Service has awarded $4.3 million to NEFF and its partners to help Maine forest landowners protect Maine’s oldest forests and implement practices on nearby lands that will help store carbon, and protect ecosystem health and biodiversity. NEFF will partner with landowners to defer timber harvesting in forests that are at least 150 years old, known as late successional old growth (LSOG) stands. “This is a singular opportunity to protect highly valuable, ecologically rare, and carbon-dense late successional old growth forests,” said Ryan Owens, Executive Director of the New England Forestry Foundation. “It also will allow us to fund landowners and foresters to practice forestry that mitigates climate change, improves forest productivity, and improves wildlife habitat, so this is a win-win-win.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eX6uS5kG #carbon #forestry #climatechange #oldgrowth #newengland #maine

We will be at the Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK) UK Policy Conference on the 5th December. If you're going too please do come and find us, at 12.35pm we will be showing our latest films in the Wood for the Trees series, a two-parter exploring #ContinuousCoverForestry (CCF). Filmed at Stourhead (Western) Estate in Wiltshire with David Pengelly, the film asks if forests can be managed to support biodiversity, enhance climate resilience, and maintain profitable timber harvesting. CCF is widespread across Europe but less so in the UK. What role might it have in our forest future? #forestryuk #sustainableforestry #regenerativeforestry #woodindustry #forestsandclimate #ukwoodlands #greeneconomy #ukforestry #woodforthetreesuk The Woodland Trust The Wildlife Trusts Evolving Forests Forestry England Forestry Commission Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Sylva Foundation

Behind the Lens: Capturing Forest Restoration in Arizona for The Nature Conservancy Photographing a story of Suarez Forestry for TNC, was an inspiring experience. This family-owned timber company works to reduce wildfire risks, watershed protection and restore ponderosa pine forests through sustainable thinning practices. Using a Nikon Z9 Mirror-less camera and a myriad of different focal length lenes, I captured wide shots of the forest's scale and detail shots of the team in action. The snowy conditions created a powerful visual for the impact of their efforts. There were challenges, of course. Maneuvering around active logging operations meant staying vigilant and following safety protocols. Uneven terrain and unpredictable weather tested my patience, but careful planning and adaptability made all the difference. The final images tell a story of resilience and dedication. They celebrate the beauty of the forest and the hard work of those restoring it, showcasing the tangible benefits of their efforts to protect this vital ecosystem.
