Exciting news from Greece! The European Commission has approved an initial €93 million from the Cohesion Fund to support the regeneration of the €370m Faliron Bay Metropolitan Park at the waterfront of Athens.
This landmark project, supported by our JASPERS experts, aims to transform a 540-hectare area into a green, inclusive and vibrant space, in line with the principles of the New European Bauhaus.
Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira said: “The Faliron Bay Park will be a new highlight and tourist attraction for the city of Athens. The green space will connect people of all ages, and residents will have access to sporting, educational, and creative activities. The project inspired by the New European Bauhaus initiative will set a perfect example of how urban investments can be designed in a sustainable, aesthetic, and inclusive way.”
Key highlights of the project:
🌳75% Green Coverage: creating a Mediterranean natural landscape through the planting of 2,900 trees, which will offer favourable microclimatic conditions and have a substantial footprint for the wider area
🏞️Sustainable Design: repurposing buildings used for the 2004 Olympics, integrating renewable energy sources into the park’s energy mix, supporting biodiversity and increasing the waterfront’s flood protection capacity
🧓 Inclusiveness: creating a hub of diverse sporting, recreation, cultural and educational activities for people of all ages
🧑🦼➡️ Accessibility: fully accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and people with mobility constraints. Through the modernisation of roads, tram networks, and footpaths, the park will be connected to the neighbouring areas.
Our JASPERS experts worked closely with the project team, supporting the region through a close engagement with citizens and bringing ideas for sustainable and effective design; all whilst looking to meet the technical, economic and environmental requirements for cohesion funding.
The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2028.
