"If they can't learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn." I spotted this inspiring poster when I facilitated a work planning session at APSN yesterday, and it really resonated with me. It’s a great reminder that teaching isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal—it’s about meeting each student where they’re at and adapting to their unique ways of learning. As Educators, when we focus on each student’s unique strengths, challenges, and experiences, it helps us teach in a way that connects with them. By paying attention to our students' needs, we can adapt our approach to make learning more inclusive and accessible. It’s not just about delivering knowledge—it’s about building an environment where every student has a fair chance to thrive. #inclusivelearning #humancenteredlearning #humancenterdesign #inclusiveeducation

This morning, I was honored to attend the White House's Every Day Counts Summit focused on addressing chronic absenteeism and increasing student engagement. Today's conversation underscores the critical role that attendance plays in student success and educational outcomes, and I was glad to hear the administration's commitment to increasing attendance and a showcase of practices that schools and communities can use to support students. Chronic absenteeism is often a symptom of larger problems, and leaders should focus interventions on: 1. Improved reporting of real-time absenteeism data, allowing school, district, and business leaders to understand the scale of their community's attendance problem 2. Increasing clear, effective communication to students and families, emphasizing the importance of being at school and creating a culture of attendance 3. Making learning more relevant to students' interests, especially through career-connected learning Business leaders have an important role to play in emphasizing the importance of attendance - without being in school, students won't learn the critical academic and durable skills they need to succeed in the workforce and society. By partnering with school and district leaders, we can create robust support systems to ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive and that #EveryDayCounts! #ChronicAbsenteeism #K12Education

The time feels so right for this Two days of exploring the 'why', the 'what' and most significantly, the 'how' of Contextual Wellbeing as a means of supporting your students and staff in the unique contexts of your school. This will include a big focus on understanding disengagement, poor mental health and unwanted behaviours as signs of unmet needs for self-determination in students. Students struggle when they have a perceived lack of competency (evidenced in so many disengaged young people), relationship difficulties (often stemming from exclusion, a lack of emotional regulation or a failure to be assertive), and/or a perceived lack of agency (possibly due to a lack of psychological safety, or because of programs that are all about control). Come along to develop insight, inspiration and a clear plan of action to ensure your unique context can best support these core needs in your students (and indeed in your staff). Wellbeing needs to be developed in the spaces between us, if it is to be experienced within us. #contextualwellbeing matters PositiveSchools.com.au Positive Schools The MacKillop Institute See you there!
After fifteen years and over seventy-five successful Positive Schools conferences, I have come to believe that there is a lack of understanding about how best to support wellbeing in schools. I'm convinced the Positive Schools 2024 'Big Workshop' clearly addresses this challenge, as the most informed, comprehensive event we have ever delivered. The event will offer educators an evidence-based, dynamic, custom-made and precise set of real-world tools and ideas. Information that delegates can take into their classrooms and broader communities to ensure that they can put wellbeing successfully into action in their schools. This is not another program, nor is it an add-on initiative or passing trend. This is real-world, systemic development. This is wellbeing in action. If you want to understand how wellbeing in your school is experienced, and how to build it, then, Positive Schools 2024 promises to deliver like no other.
