Today marks my 6th anniversary with Endeavour Group, particularly in my role as Wine Merchant with Dan Murphy’s. A milestone like this invites reflection - not just on these six years, but on the broader journey that started over 30 years ago when I began my professional career.
Back then, the business world revolved around products. It was the golden age of product developers, designers, and engineers. If a product could deliver, it had authority. Then came the marketing era, where the focus shifted to global expansion, cultural nuances, and market positioning. Marketing was the driving force, the unquestioned authority.
Today, we’re deep in the age of commercial authority - dominated by numbers, KPIs, profit margins, and cost savings. While metrics are essential, I believe managing purely by numbers is like painting by numbers: it might create a recognizable picture, but it’s far from art.
What’s missing is the human factor - the art of managing people, valueing both customers and employees as individuals, not statistics. In large organizations, employees often feel like mere numbers: moved around, added, subtracted, or multiplied with little regard for their unique skills, knowledge, and experiences. We talk about diversity and inclusion, but are we genuinely respecting individuals? True inclusion means seeing beyond numbers to the person behind them.
It’s time to challenge this norm. Let’s shift the focus to human relationships - not through standard HR processes, but through authentic connections. Business, at its core, is still done between people. The customer-supplier relationship thrives on trust and respect. Remember when a handshake sealed a deal?
Imagine a business model where no single authority - be it product, marketing, or finance - dominates. Instead, every discipline, every voice, and especially the customer, has a seat at the table. Such an environment fosters respect, and from respect grows trust.
Here’s to the next chapter - one where we prioritize people, not just performance.
