In the buffer zone of Cordillera Azul National Park, situated in the Ucayali department, are the indigenous communities of Santa Rosa de Aguaytía, from the Shipibo-Conibo people, and Yamino and Mariscal Cáceres, from Kakataibo people.
Their territory has been affected by deforestation and degradation of over 7,945 hectares of forest, endangering various species of flora and fauna. In response to this challenge, indigenous women are leading transformative efforts through the restoration of degraded landscapes.
These women know intimately that land restoration is critical for achieving a sustainable future. Restoring land will help tackle climate change and nature loss, while closing the food gap, creating robust economies, and improving people’s health and well-being.
With less than a week before the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (#COP16) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (2-13 December), we know that restoring land will help tackle climate change and nature loss, improve food security, create robust economies, and improve people’s health and well-being.
#COP16Riyadh is an opportunity to raise global ambition and accelerate action for #OurLandOurFuture. Halting biodiversity loss, protecting and restoring land, and increasing resilience to drought and floods.
Take a look at how PNUD Perú, CIMA - Cordillera Azul, Global Environment Facility and more, are working together to protect and restore land #ForPeopleForPlanet: https://ow.ly/FZ2w50U9BQY
