After a recent poll on my LinkedIn, in which I asked about the most important aspect in scouting youth footballers, it became clear that mentality and character are very important. This confirms an essential truth in youth football: technique and physical ability are crucial, but the player's mentality and character are decisive. Mentality and character include resilience, eagerness to learn, discipline, respect and the mental flexibility to handle both success and setbacks. These traits are critical for players' growth and adaptation to the professional level. In scouting, we pay attention not only to how a player performs, but also to his behaviour and attitude inside and outside the pitch. This gives us insight into his potential to develop into a valuable player in the long term. This just goes to show: in youth football scouting, it is not only what a player can do now that counts, but especially what he can achieve in the future through his character and mentality. #youthfootball #scouting #footballscouting #poll #football

Rugby Refereeing This year I completed my first full season refereeing rugby union. I refereed games from Under 13 to Under 18s, and some men's Sevens as well. Two highlights were being appointed to referee the Under 15 grand final last week and also the Under 15 Regionals in July. It was an experience full of challenges and hard work, but ultimately was immensely rewarding and enjoyable. My great thanks to the Western Australian Rugby Union Referees' Association team, and special gratitude to my referee coach and Premier Grade Referee, Ben Jones, who was a brilliant mentor for me in 2024 (pictured below at the GF). Thank you, Ben, for your patience and terrific support. Rugby is one complex game! The challenges of refereeing are manifold: learning the Laws; exercising judgement on when to get involved and when to stay out of the contest; being assertive at times and conciliatory at others; being physically fit; being prepared to be wrong and coping with being told how wrong you were about decisions; developing a deep understanding of the game; reading behaviour and actions of players and coaches; and of course, developing great communication. I made plenty of mistakes along the way and there is still so much more for me to learn. But I am so looking forward to continuing to improve in the years ahead. I have been very lucky to see great referees in action, and to learn from the best in our state. The year on field gave me some opportunities to reflect on the learning process which I will share in coming posts. Something I found myself saying often during the season was, "Refereeing can be great fun. But sometimes it is fun because it is enjoyable, and sometimes it is fun because it is hard." #education #referee #rugbyreferee #mentors #learning #warura #rugbywa #rugbyaustralia

🏅 Addressing Unfair Play at the 2024 Olympics: A Call for Integrity and Respect 🏅 The 2024 Olympics have captivated us with remarkable athletic performances, but they've also highlighted a troubling trend: unfair play and questionable conduct that undermine the essence of the Games. A prime example is Duco Telgenkamp’s controversial play in the hockey final against German keeper Dannekamp, where Telgenkamp’s interference disrupted Dannekamp’s ability to defend effectively. This incident, coupled with dubious refereeing decisions in basketball semifinals, unsportsmanlike gestures in swimming, and lane encroachments in track and field, has raised serious concerns about the fairness of the competition. These actions go beyond individual games—they disrespect the core Olympic spirit and values. The Olympic Games are meant to celebrate human achievement, honor fair competition, and embody the highest standards of sportsmanship. When athletes and officials engage in unfair practices, they not only tarnish the integrity of the sport but also undermine the very essence of the Olympic ideal. It's crucial that we, as a global community, reaffirm our commitment to respect and fairness. Let’s work together to ensure that future Olympic events truly reflect the spirit of the Games and provide every athlete with a level playing field. 🌟🤝 #Olympics2024 #FairPlay #Sportsmanship #Respect #Integrity #LevelPlayingField #OlympicValues #GameOn #AthleteRespect #UnfairPlay #CleanCompetition #TrueSpiritOfSport #OlympicIntegrity #RespectTheGame #AthleteFairness #OlympicSpirit

Club managers who are cup specialists may make better international coaches than proven league winners. International coaching is more about getting the tactics right in every game with little room for error. League football is a marathon while cup competitions are a series of sprints. Some managers/coaches excel in both but more often than not a good league run does influence results in cup competitions as well. #football #sports #sport #sportsjournalism #coaching
