In 2016 — eight years before energy-guzzling data centers provoked a public outcry — we published an exposé detailing the billions of dollars flowing to companies — especially tech giants like Amazon, Google and Microsoft — to build data centers. The costs, we revealed, were almost $2 million per job, more than a small town may spend in an entire year on street improvements. The same year, we revealed billions more in subsidies going to Amazon warehouses, and would soon publish an interactive map showing that the warehouses locate between trucking hubs and wealthy ZIP codes with lots of Prime subscribers. No group was more critical of Amazon’s HQ2 auction than we were (and the company was bracing for our reactions, as Brad Stone’s Amazon Unbound later reported). Our work on Amazon continues unabated. Most people don't realize that every big tech company has a secret. They're almost never paying full price for any product.
