Switch Stacking Technology: Widely Adopted in Many Small Business Data Centers Switch stacking technology is well-known to many people, and it's widely adopted by numerous small and medium-sized enterprises. Its configuration's simplicity provides device redundancy and enhances bandwidth, making it a preferred choice for many businesses. However, with the rapid advancement of cloud computing, data centers are gradually moving away from stacking. The fundamental reasons lie in some drawbacks of stacking technology: Firstly, stacking belongs to a single control plane, leading to wastage of forwarding performance; Secondly, upgrades and cuts pose significant challenges, particularly fatal in data centers; Third, stack splitting can occur during subsequent device operations without DAD detection during power outages. Consequently, stacking in current data center setups is gradually being replaced by MLAG technology. MLAG, or Multi-Chassis Link Aggregation, aggregates across devices, integrating the advantages of stacking and VRRP while mitigating their drawbacks. It's believed that MLAG technology will dominate in the future. #cloudcomputing #datacenter #switchstacking #MLAG

The Uptime Institute recently released their comprehensive 2024 Global Data Center Survey, highlighting the latest trends and experiences of data center owners and operators, globally. Below are my key takeaways: 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 • In 2024, 55% of IT workloads were hosted off-premises, up from 42% in 2020. By 2026, this is projected to reach 58%. Our work also reinforces this view in Australia, but we see significantly lower adoption of colo facilities across Southeast Asia and India, although that number is rising rapidly • Third-party DC/Colo providers are the real winners here, with 61% of colo providers now hosting hyperscale cloud tenants. In Australia all the major colo providers host hyperscale clients • Half of operators are also deploying on-prem private cloud infrastructure, although we do not see this trend in Australia. All the major DC operators in Australia offer pure colocation services for enterprises, governments and hyperscalers 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 – 𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗽𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 • Average rack density continued its gradual climb, with 7-9 kW deployments becoming all the rage in 2024. The average of the most common rack densities was 8 kW • High density deployments (>15 kW per rack) also saw a boost, thanks to the growing adoption of higher-powered CPUs and GPUs (#GenAI). A third of operators are even upgrading existing data halls to keep up with the demand for more power 𝗣𝗨𝗘 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀 • The industry average PUE remained at 1.56 for the fifth year in a row. However, this masks efficiency gains in newer, larger facilities that are consistently achieving PUEs of 1.3 or better. Based on our analysis, all major players in Australia have market leading PUEs • With data center construction at an all-time high, these more efficient facilities are expected to bring down the average PUE in coming years as they make up a larger portion of the global data center footprint 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗹𝘆 • 53% of operators experienced an outage in the past 3 years, down from 60% in 2022. However, serious outages are at an all-time low • Still, outages are expensive - over half cost more than $100k, and 1 in 5 cost over $1 million. On-site power issues remain the top cause The full report can be downloaded from Uptime’s website (will require registration). #datacentres #datacenter #AI #digitalinfrastructure
