Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) model. The Cornell eBird site provides access to raw data on bird observations if you are interested in local bird populations. They also developed an R package named “auk” to analyze the data. The data comes from birders who record their sightings and includes several years of information across many regions and species. The data can be filtered by time and region among other criteria when downloaded. In the remote, rugged, Northeastern terrain of B.C., nearly half of the world’s Stone’s sheep habitat can be found. These sheep and the ecosystem surrounding them have been supported through careful forest management practices since the 1970s. One such practice, jointly funded in recent years by HCTF and the Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC), is prescribed fire. In May 2022, approximately 160 hectares of Stone’s sheep winter habitat were treated with prescribed fire. This initiative targeted four specific slopes (hillsides), utilizing aerial ignition techniques (dropping fire from helicopters) to reduce woody vegetation, enhance forage quality, and improve predator detection capabilities for the sheep. This treatment was part of a broader objective to restore and maintain habitat not only for Stone’s sheep but, in future project years, also for bighorn sheep, which inhabit the southernmost extent of the region. “Make sure to get my good side!” Just like top models, 🐞 insects that #APHISTaxonomists identify need a good headshot. Have you noticed how the contrasting backgrounds highlight different features? This technique is demonstrated by Entomologist Elizabeth Lavi, who took these pictures at Los Angeles International Airport in California. Each image used the same settings when photographing the specimen. The background color is the only difference between the images. Depending on the background, different characteristics become more visible. A simple background color adjustment can help highlight the physical features you seek to capture when photographing an insect specimen. APHIS employees work at ports and inspection stations across the United States where pictures like these are essential to identifying invasive insect species. When a field employee is working on a #PestID, they often communicate with taxonomists at APHIS headquarters in Beltsville, MD to confirm their find. Clear photos help a taxonomist identify an insect. Changing the background color can make a big difference. Intercepting and accurately identifying a high-consequence pest at the border is important and helps USDA protect American agriculture and natural resources from exotic, damaging pests.
