There are so many opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and embed circularity by keeping materials in use for longer. This week the team and I had the chance to explore innovative potential future uses for coal ash. The volume of this material within NSW is massive and bringing together industry, government, the Ash Development Association of Australia and research organisations is critical to deliver on the opportunity to use coal ash in the development of high quality products used in construction and related industries - all with significant carbon abatement potential. There are few quick wins with this one, but step by step, we’re working through the complexities and how end markets may be developed. 📢 #MHnS and Stantec teams are thrilled about a new collaboration with one of our longstanding clients, the City of Lloydminster ! Under the guidance of the City’s Environmental Service’s team, we will be working on an Integrated Waste Management and Facility Master Plan to guide the city’s solid waste management for the next twenty years.🌱 ♻ Advancing Lloydminster’s City Council’s strategic goals in environmental stewardship, this comprehensive plan will assess the current waste management system and identify strategies to enhance and support it. Key focus areas include: • Waste Reduction and Reuse • Waste Diversion • Alternative Waste Technologies (including Waste-to-Energy) • Landfilling options ⌛ Although in the early stages, we are excited about the collaboration between #MHnS and Stantec’s waste planning and landfill engineering teams, as well as leaders from City of Lloydminster administration. 👏 With our combined expertise and dedication to our client, we are confident we can help improve Lloydminster’s waste management systems. Walsall Works visited the new Energy Recovery Centre being delivered by Encyclis at Leamore Lane in Bloxwich. The company are investing a whopping £600m to create a state of the art facility to turn residual waste that would otherwise be landfilled. This process supports the circular economy and sustainability by giving a second life to general household and commercial waste. The plant will create 600 new jobs in the processing of turning waste management into baseload electricity, which in turn will create hot water for district heat networks. Rob Beck will be the relationship manager to ensure local people secure these local jobs.

Katia Brisson, Associate Director at Gravis, highlights the crucial role the asset plays in managing residual waste in Gloucestershire. The facility converts up to 190,000 tonnes of waste annually into electricity. This process generates over 14.6MW of power, enough to supply approximately 25,000 homes each year. Beyond waste management, it significantly reduces landfill use and contributes to sustainable energy production.
