Have a listen as Dr. Ike Ogbuanu, Site Director & Principal Investigator of the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Programme in Sierra Leone, discusses on Afri Radio FM 105.3 key insights of CHAMPS surveillance activities and interventions. ➡ 2017 – CHAMPS commenced operations in Sierra Leone ➡ The programme investigates factors responsible for deaths of under-five children ➡ More than 90% of child deaths are preventable ➡ Stillbirths and neonatal deaths mostly caused due to: Poor quality of ANC care due to unavailability of key clinical resources and expertise; late referrals; little or no attention to danger signs during pregnancy (bleeding, severe vomiting, abdominal pain/cramping, swelling in the hands/face/legs, persistent backache); poor medical equipment/skill sets at health facilities to ensure safe delivery. 🌟 **World Kidney Day Awareness** 🌟 Today, we shine a spotlight on a vital organ that doesn't get enough credit: the kidney. Premature kidney conditions can strike silently, leading to severe health complications. The number of nephrons in a premature kidney is significantly less compared to a term baby. A term baby typically has between **300,000 to over one million nephrons. In contrast, babies born preterm, particularly those born before the last few weeks of pregnancy when nephron development occurs, may have only about **400,000 to 600,000 nephrons. As a result, preterm infants are at a higher risk for chronic kidney disease and other renal health issues later in life. On #worldkidneyday , let's pledge to prioritize their renal health.💚 #kidneyhealth

Under-five child mortality (U5M) remains a critical global health issue, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare. This study were conducted to assess the associations between U5M and various factors, including maternal employment, mode of delivery, breastfeeding practices, birth size, and birth interval. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to reduce U5M, particularly in regions with higher mortality rates. Public health strategies should prioritize maternal care, breastfeeding promotion, and family planning to address these key determinants.
