This event will bring public and private sectors from the EU and Ukraine together to shed light on the priorities and challenges of the Ukraine Plan for 2024-2027 under the EU's Ukraine Facility. The war in #Ukraine stands at a critical juncture, and priority must be given not only to supplying Ukraine to fight the war, but to potential pathways that can guarantee Ukraine a secure and prosperous future.  Admitting Ukraine as a member of the European Union is a crucial option for Ukraine and for the EU’s security – but realising this will require key decisions in Kyiv, in Brussels and in EU capitals. Ukraine’s path to EU membership will demand substantial political, economic and structural adjustments from both Ukraine and the EU. That’s a pleasure to be this morning at the conference ReBuild Ukraine on the sidelines of the INTERMAT Expo. Great notice from Pierre Heilbronn, Emmanuel Macron's special envoy for the reconstruction of Ukraine, that reconstruction is not only physical rebuilding but the way how you are rethinking the future of the country. And France would definitely have its particular role in this challenge. According to Nataliia Kozlovska, Deputy Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, 360 000 objects are destroyed in Ukraine during the war, most of each are residential buildings. As well as energy facilities. Certain towns are demolished for 100%. The scale is huge. And as Ukraine’s ambassador Vadym Omelchenko mentioned, solidarity and trust between 🇺🇦 and 🇫🇷 are unprecedented, but Ukraine aims to be perceived as a market of recovery which is attractive for external comers. A market with an eminent capacity and prospects for foreign companies, businesses and innovators. Reconstruction is now.

On the heels of the Ukraine Recovery Conference, it is important to remember that targeted funding is essential for addressing the needs of the Roma, especially in housing, employment and skill acquisition, considering the informal nature of these areas. While the EU’s new Ukraine Facility provides aid for Ukraine’s recovery, for example, it overlooks the specific challenges faced by the Roma community. “This double standard is very damaging for the credibility of the European Union and for the defence of its fundamental values”   🎙 On 4 October, Prof. Luigi Narbone, Director of the Luiss Mediterranean Platform, was interviewed by Euronews on the European Union’s response to the possibility of a large-scale war in the Middle East.   Prof. Narbone highlighted the EU's own internal divisions and how the Union is perceived by the majority of the Global South as applying a double standard in its response to Israel's invasion of Gaza and Lebanon, compared to its firm response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.   Moreover, the Russian presence in various theatres, including Syria, and the economic repercussions that could arise from the situation in the Middle East, could, according to Prof Narbone, also affect migratory flows, with implications for Italy and the EU.   Listen to the interview here: https://bit.ly/3NaY4ma.   #LuissMediterraneanPlatform Luiss School of Government
