The UK was the first major economy to put the commitment to reach net zero by 2050 into law. While this was highly influential and a major milestone in global climate policy, the UK must demonstrate its leadership once more through action, setting its sights on developing the next generation of climate solutions and encouraging their adoption globally. Senior Policy Advisor on Climate and Energy Policy, Tone Langengen, discusses the practical policies leaders should develop to implement clean technologies around the world. Christmas comes early this year: our report on the past decade of Tony Blair Institute for Global Change’s partnership with Power Africa is out, and ready to be unwrapped - by you, dear reader! This is a story of African government leadership. It is about why and how leadership is essential for power sectors to deliver successfully to all. You’ll read about how African leaders in 13 countries have driven such change, and how we’ve worked with them on that journey. The leaders we worked with over the past decade set out and delivered on power sector strategies (counting 24, for the numerically inclined) and policies (counting 42) which enabled the private sector to invest and deliver better and more sustainable power solutions. Thanks to their leadership, governments also succeeded in raising direct investment funding (of more than US$ 1.5 Bn). There’s a long list of people to whom I am deeply grateful for delivering on our partnership - partners, colleagues, and senior advisors. On top of the list, there’s Sergio Portatadino, who was central to shaping and driving our work. Happy reading! Tina Runeyi Gbolahan F.
