Tubi TV: Exploiting Black Entertainers While Fox News Undermines Black Voters... Tubi, a free streaming service owned by Fox Corporation, has been actively promoting and featuring Black content, including original movies and shows with predominantly Black casts. This strategy has helped Tubi attract a significant Black audience and drive its rapid growth. We are proactively working to protect Community Media and Public Access with the Community Media Reinvestment Act. Public Access began in the 70's & 80s when cable companies used the public rights away (streets, roads, etc) to lay cables in communities to bring the, then, new age of broadcast TV to households - so public access was created to give back to our communities. We're now in a new age of digital streaming using the same public rights of way, but the laws do not yet require streamers to give back the same way. Public Access empowers our communities giving voice around advocacy, diversity, creativity, and positive impact. If you're in NY, see this post, watch this video, and encourage your electeds to support the Community Media Reinvestment Act, and let you voice be heard. If you're not in NY, your state should also have Public Access!
BRIC (Arts & Media in Brooklyn) and our fellow media centers around New York are working hard to pass the Community Media Reinvestment Act in Albany.
This legislation is essential for securing the use of NY’s media access centers that for decades have amplified diverse voices. We also provide workforce development opportunities, studio and rehearsal space, broadcast channels, and much more!
Please head to the Legislative Portal and let your elected official know that community media are the building blocks of our creative economy.
