It’s a long time that I’m denouncing the weakness of our food system specially the capacity to achieve the self-sufficiency of the processing sector of the agricultural produce. Particular weakness is showed by those who process tropical agri-produce such as cocoa, coffe, dried fruit and herbs and spice. The import barrier, infact, makes the sector unable to produce for Non-EU countries with imported raw commodities not complying with EU regulation, but perfectly complying with other countries sanitary regulations. Mining the possibility to create processing hub in EU, with the aim to export worldwide, reduces the market share and the sale volume, with the consequent difficult to invest and strenghten the processing (self-sufficiency) of the EU industry . No sale, no money, no party ! Making regulation is a responsibility as it impacts on the market; one cannot forget that Non-EU competition is jeopardising the EU agri-industry sector. #tropicalproduce #importsanitarybarrier #rawmaterialban #herbsandspice #EUagrifoodprocessor
I must confess, I was a bit shocked when I checked this particular outcome of the Ipsos survey conducted for Euronews. Almost half of the respondents considered the EU’s actions to impact negatively on the protection of European agriculture and the bloc’s food independence. Both protection of European agriculture and food independence take centre stage in the EU's farming subsidies programme - which is also one of the bloc's biggest cash envelopes. “It’s interesting that respondents in the biggest EU producers, led by France but also Poland, Spain, and Italy, have the most negative views,” leading CAP expert Alan Matthews told me commenting on the poll. But there's another interesting detail to point out: the rise of a new fault line on the topic of food security. Check out my latest story for more!

Shifting from ‘clockwork’ to ‘cloudwork’ approaches. Food and agriculture systems are more like clouds than clocks. This means, the challenges food systems are facing, are immensely complex, multi-dimensional and ever changing: they need to be addressed systemically. This mindset shift for many international development organisations has far reaching implications for: 🌐The funding, design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of projects, programmes and portfolios. 💡Organisational culture, policies, procedures and the type of skillsets required by international development practitioners. 📈Wider systemic incentives in how donors fund and think about impacts Read the recommendations from global food systems experts in our latest report "Navigating Complexity in Food Systems: From Clockwork to Cloudwork" here: https://lnkd.in/dnjdw7qY

FAO released its annual State of Food and Agriculture report, which uncovers the hidden costs of agrifood systems through the lenses of health, social, and environmental impacts, which exceed 10 trillion dollars at 2020 purchasing power parity (PPP). About 70% of global hidden costs stem from health impacts linked to non-communicable diseases, particularly in more industrialized agrifood systems. Interventions to address unhealthy dietary patterns can also address a substantial share of environmental hidden costs. 🔎 In examining the hidden environmental costs, the report outlines #ClimateChange’s impact on food security, ecosystems, and agriculture, emphasizing the need for climate-resilient agricultural practices and policies. We must invest in #ClimateSolutions for agrifood systems to help ease these hidden costs. And we must consider the interconnected nature of health, society, and the environment in our approaches. https://lnkd.in/e6ktKRBP

Our 2024 annual report is here! We're excited to share that we've helped over 40,000 small farmers and workers in food and agriculture businesses. This wouldn't have been possible without working hand-in-hand with local communities. The report dives into projects we ran in five countries, helping farmers improve the quality of their food, find better markets to sell their crops, and work together to export their products. Here's what we've achieved: • Research collaboration: We're working with researchers and food industry players in 6 countries to identify innovative solutions for agrifood supply chains. • Knowledge generation: In 2023 alone, we produced 39 valuable resources, designed 23 innovations, and held 11 capacity-building activities. • Piloting innovations: Together with local partners, we've launched pilot tests of these innovations in 7 value chains across 5 countries.
