As Independent Schools Council #PartnershipsWeek2024 comes to an end it's important to reflect on the outstanding partnership work that is taking place between schools across the education sector, and organisations outside of it, dedicated to improving outcomes for children. This week I've been blown away time and time again by inspirational educators with a single focus on children. Not the 94% of children in state schools, or the 6% of children in independent schools. Just children. I've heard truly inspirational teachers like Marcus Shepherd talk about the difference education makes for those from deprived areas. I've seen innovators like Tim Dalton and Gitanjali Bhattacharya communicate passionately about how relatively little resource can make huge differences in the lives of looked after children. I've been uplifted by talking with politicians in both the House of Lords and House of Commons who understand that together - in partnership -we can make a huge impact. And, certainly not least, I've been privileged to be a part of HMC (The Heads' Conference)'s Public Benefit and Partnerships Committee in planning how our members can contribute to the national debate on improving partnerships in the coming years. At yesterday's School Partnerships Alliance (S.P.A.) annual conference I was honoured to be asked to speak a few words and reflected on the proverb that 'a society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.' The professionals I've been fortunate to work with this week (in most cases) are certainly not old men, but they all understand the important partnership work we do will be bearing fruit for generations to come. That is how we make education (and society) great. As partnership week ends I know that shared ambition has never been stronger.

In the quest for educational equity and inclusion, partnerships between educational institutions, nonprofits, and communities are lighting the way forward. These collaborations are a testament to what can be achieved when diverse groups come together with a common goal: to ensure that every student has access to a quality education, irrespective of their background. From joint research initiatives to community-based education programs, these partnerships are breaking down barriers and creating more inclusive learning environments. They're not just changing policies; they're transforming lives by making education more accessible, culturally responsive, and equitable for all. As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, it's crucial to recognize the role of collective effort in continuing the journey towards educational justice. This landmark ruling was a pivotal moment in the fight for desegregation, setting the stage for future advancements in equity and inclusion. 🌟 Let's honor this legacy by supporting and initiating partnerships that drive progress in our education systems. 🌟 Discover how you can contribute to fostering these vital collaborations and join us in celebrating the strides we're making towards a more equitable educational landscape. 🔗 For more information on the commemoration event and how you can participate, visit https://lnkd.in/gtzj6NVD #PartnershipsForProgress #EducationalEquity #BrownvBoard70 #InclusiveEducation #CommunityImpact

The Indiana Charter Innovation Center (ICIC) is proud to stand on the shoulders of giants, building on the incredible foundation laid by former Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson, The Mind Trust, and countless charter school champions. Their visionary work has set the stage for excellence in Indiana, and we are deeply thankful for their efforts 🙌✨. Now, ICIC is poised to set the pace for the nation’s charter sector, leaning into the three essential elements of success: vision, people, and a strong advocacy structure. As highlighted in "The Indiana-Polis Story," Indiana’s charter movement isn’t just about leading—it’s about “pacing the nation” by embracing bold innovation, empowering passionate leaders, and advocating relentlessly for the resources our schools need to thrive. At ICIC, we’re driving transformative growth 📈 by increasing the number of high-quality charter schools, advocating for equitable funding 🏛️ to close resource gaps, and providing unparalleled support to strengthen school leaders and ensure excellent student outcomes 🎓. With this foundation, we’re positioning Indiana’s charter schools as national pioneers in educational innovation and accountability. Together, we’re shaping the future of education, ensuring every student in Indiana has access to a world-class education. Let’s continue setting the pace for the nation—one student at a time! 💡🚀 👉 Read the full CharterFolk article by Jed Wallace here: https://bit.ly/4dvop9q #InnovationInEducation #INCharters #CharterSchools #PacingTheNation #IndianaEducation

Now this is what I call changing the conversation. Pulitzer Center reports on the impact of Nikole Hannah-Jones #1619project. I was certainly changed after reading the book and watching the documentary. Having been raised to fight #racism, I thought I knew a lot. These materials opened my eyes to so many things I missed. "Over 1 million people have engaged with the reading guides we published in 2019 as the first initiative for this partnership. Since that time, we’ve developed a series of educator programs, building a network of 541 educator partners and reaching over 25,000 students in pre-K-12th grade and over 2,500 adult learners. We have facilitated 203 events and workshops attended by over 15,000 people, and published over 100 curricular materials on our award-winning 1619education.org website, which has been viewed over 400,000 times by people in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. "In our most recent survey of our website audience, 87% say that they would highly recommend our resources to other educators. The educators surveyed saw positive impacts on their learning environments with 78% of the educators reporting that the 1619 materials helped their students build new content knowledge, and 75% of educators surveyed reported that engaging with 1619 helped their students further develop critical thinking skills." Check out this fascinating research from Dr. Chen Ji, assistant professor in our Department of Non-Profit Administration!
New NACC Member Research by Genevieve Shaker, Ph.D. from, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy; Meng-Han Ho, Ph.D. from National Central University; and Chen Ji, Ph.D. from LSU Shreveport🖊️ The COVID-19 #pandemic upended college classrooms, challenging instructors to deliver classes differently while still seeking to achieve pre-planned goals. Service-learning instructors faced a quandary: discontinuing activities could compromise course integrity, but requiring service was impossible, impractical, or inappropriate. Creative solutions were needed. This study explored the learning outcomes from a replacement activity, the #philanthropic informational interview, in a #philanthropy general education class and asked whether it could generate outcomes similar to #service-learning. Data were drawn from student reflections (n = 145) from nine online course sections between spring 2020 and summer 2021. Thematic analysis identified eight learning outcomes: engaging with social issues, #nonprofit solutions to social issues, insights into nonprofits’ inner workings, philanthropy as everyone’s responsibility, enhanced empathetic understanding, value-driven career inspiration, developing interview skills, and building career capacities. These outcomes align with research about service-learning and suggest that the philanthropic informational interview can be a meaningful alternative to service-learning in some situations. This work was originally published by the Journal of Nonprofit Education & Leadership, Vol 14, Issue 1 (2024) and can be accessed below. https://lnkd.in/dds_WQpi
