Yesterday, we celebrated the opening of Better Future Farms in Louisa County. Providing job opportunities to area residents, the next-generation hydroponic greenhouse will produce several million pounds of high-quality leafy greens each year. The project was made possible by Generate Capital (a leading sustainable infrastructure investment and operating platform), an Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund grant with a local funds match, and a sales agreement with Taylor Farms (the nation’s largest salad producer). The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Louisa County Economic Development (led by the amazing Andy Wade) and our Industrial Development Authority helped secure the project for the Commonwealth with support from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative and many others.

Preserving Oregon’s Heritage: The Duyck Family Legacy in the Tualatin Plains If you’re a fan of Yellowstone, you know the Duttons represent grit, heritage, and the fight to preserve a way of life. Here in Oregon, us Duycks are the real-life version of the Duttons. For over a century, my family has worked to protect the Tualatin Plains—one of the most fertile agricultural regions in the world—from the relentless tide of urban sprawl and unchecked development. The Tualatin Plains are more than just farmland—they are a cornerstone of Oregon’s history, shaped by the Missoula Floods, stewarded by Native communities, and cultivated by pioneers like the William Wilson family. As Dirk Knudsen highlights in his article, this land represents some of the richest agricultural soil on Earth, and for over a century, the Duyck family has been at the forefront of preserving and protecting it. Since 1907, the Duyck Farm has stood as a testament to sustainable farming and community resilience. Through four generations, we’ve fought to preserve Oregon’s fertile lands and historical heritage. From reusing century-old barn wood to protect the legacy of pioneers like the Wilsons, to standing against unchecked development, our family’s mission has always been to safeguard the past while building a future that values history, community, and sustainability. This is one of the reasons why I am running for Governor of Oregon. We need leadership that understands the stakes—not just the loss of farmland, but the erosion of what makes Oregon unique: our culture, our heritage, and the promise of a balanced, sustainable future. As Knudsen says, “growth for the sake of growth is a fool’s game.” Together, we can honor our past while protecting our future. Let’s ensure that Oregon’s legacy, from the Tualatin Plains to every corner of this state, thrives for generations to come. 50 years after its founding, family business Williams & White Equipment was in transition from the second generation to the third, with brothers Matt Williams and Justin Williams, PEng. taking control. Having been largely built around the forestry industry, the company provided saw guides to BC’s lumber mills. At the time, the industry was decimated by the pine beetle and the global economy was suffering as well. Matt and Justin’s father, Conrad, did not want to continue his day-to-day involvement in the business, but felt it necessary to stay and help shepherd the business through these difficult times. How did we help Williams and White overcome these significant hurdles? Scroll through to find out 💪 #BellrockEd #ManagementTraining #LeadershipDevelopment #CaseStudy

New Zealand King Salmon CEO shares details of offshore farm plan But CEO Carl Carrington emphasized the importance of a profitable core business in funding the expansion of salmon farming into the open ocean. "So, just doing what we do with our existing operations, doing it well and getting as stable as we possibly can (is crucial) because that generates the cash flow that enables us to fund our way into Blue Endeavor," he said. "Blue Endeavor is a very capital-intensive development. And to step into that, we have to be as confident as possible about the ongoing cash flows from our core business." 🌳 Urban Forestry: Building Resilient Cities for the Future 🌳 As climate change intensifies, our urban forests have never been more crucial. Trees in cities improve air quality, reduce urban heat islands, and enhance the well-being of our communities. Sustainable urban forest management helps cities become more resilient, adaptable, and livable. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provides an unprecedented opportunity for scaling up urban forestry efforts across the nation. With new funding and resources available, we can expand tree planting initiatives, enhance green infrastructure, and ensure that all communities—especially underserved ones—benefit from the shade, cooling, and ecosystem services that trees provide. At Sustainable Forestry Initiative, we are committed to advancing urban forestry with our project partners. Together, we can ensure that their cities thrive, not just for today, but for generations to come. 🌱🌆 #UrbanForestry #ClimateResilience #InflationReductionAct #GreenInfrastructure #TreePlanting #SustainableCities #UrbanGreening #ClimateAction USDA Forest Service
