Join Hire Heroes USA this Thursday, March 7th for our first Virtual Career Fair of the year! Here are a few of tips to help you prepare for the event:
1. Come prepared and do your #research. - What companies will be there? Follow that company on LinkedIn, go to their People tab, and send personalized connection requests to #recruiters and/or #hiringmanagers.
2. Research some more. - Check out the company's website to see what positions they are hiring for. If you find positions that you'd be a fit for, apply beforehand! This will allow you to speak to the recruiter and tell them that you applied to X position on Y date with Z confirmation number.
3. Prepare your questions. - After reviewing the job description and applying, start thinking of some questions you want to ask. Show the recruiter that you've done your research, you know what you're talking about, and you are truly interested in this position.
4. Update your #resume. - You need to be sure to submit a tailored version of your resume when you are applying to jobs. Have that version easily accessible if the recruiter asks you to send it to them. Usually, the event will have you upload your resume beforehand. This can be a master resume that highlights all of your skills (because you are already going to have a tailored resume for those specific jobs you're applying to).
5. Value Proposition (elevator pitch). - You already know the roles you are interested in so now it's time to tailor that #valueproposition to those roles. Be #personable and #memorable but also be #strategic. Be sure you are telling the recruiter who you are and what you have to offer to this position and this company.
6. Plan accordingly. - By now you've done your research and you know who will be in attendance. Now, you need to map out your approach. Which employer do you want to speak to the most? Start with them and then make a list of all of the employers you want to meet with. This will help you determine which "line" to get in and in what order.
7. Dress to impress. - Even though this is a virtual event, you still want to give off the appearance that you care (because you do). If you don't want to get fully dressed from head to toe, make sure your top half is presentable!
8. Be Confident. - You’ve got this! This entire process can be intimidating but just go in there with confidence and show them what you have to offer. Say some affirmations but if those aren’t your niche, go over a few of those questions/answers out loud or even your value proposition.

4moI attended this last year and it was a top notch event. They also do a job search workshop the hour before it kicks off. Well worth it.
