Access and quality must coexist.
The proposed rule change to the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (#MHPAEA) would have the opposite of its intended effect by lowering standards of care and creating barriers to mental health and substance use disorder care. "The proposed rule change would seek to increase the number of providers by decreasing the quality standards for providers. This would leave patients to navigate an already-confusing market with little to no assistance. This influx is also likely to result in patients playing a game of trial-and-error as they seek the right provider to address their needs."
The mental health crisis requires real solutions

Did you know that 58% of police officers experience PTSD or CPTSD, and 35% struggle with addiction? These numbers highlight the urgent need for mental health resources and support. My story is a testament to the power of seeking help and the importance of breaking the stigma. Let's work together to create a supportive environment for our officers. #PTSD #MentalHealthAwareness #AddictionRecovery #FirstResponders https://lnkd.in/g8JPQrgt

Community service providers in Greater Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs, please share the word. The Northern Territory Lived Experience Network has funding to deliver a limited number 'Circles of Support' programs for the family and kin of people with a loved one who experiences mental health, alcohol, drug and/or gambling related problems. (Two programs in greater Darwin, one each in Katherine and Alice Springs.) We provide 30 hours of capacity building through these programs. We know that when family members make that level of commitment they are in crisis or near breaking point. Else they would use that time to take a moment to breathe. The supportive network, education and skill building provided through 'Circles of Support' (and similar programs) is what can assist families to stay together and maintain important relationships with their loved one despite the challenges they are going through. I know, because our family was at the point of implosion when I first accessed a program like this in the early 2000s in North Queensland. Families are the backbone of our health system. The equivalent value of the care, support and advocacy they provide is 1.7 times what all governments spend on mental health (cant give you the stats for AOD problems). When families are not supported, more people become unwell, that unpaid care and support falls away and the burden to the health system dramatically increases. Please share the word about our upcoming programs and support Territorian families. More info (including program flyers) on our website https://lnkd.in/gga77t6e

(this will be the 2nd and 3rd of May). In the meantime time we are planning to run repeat information sessions about all three of our upcoming Katherine programs (Recovery Together, Circles of Support and the Empowering YOUth Program) over the next two weeks. Dates and times as follows: Thursday 18/4/24 - 1:30 pm Thursday (18/4/24) - 3 pm Friday (19/4/24) - 10 am Friday (19/4/24 - 11:30 am Friday (26/04/24) - 10 am Friday 26/04/24) - 11:30 am Each one of the above information sessions will be the same and hosted at the Flinders Training Room at Katherine Hospital (opposite the ED). “Significant staffing shortages and recruitment challenges have been pinpointed as the primary contributor to the country's declining accessibility for specialist mental health support.” How many government agencies - tasked with workforce development - does it take to turn planning into action? ✅ Pay people to train in professions we need ✅ Pay them decent salaries on completion ✅ Sustainable workforce growth will alleviate pressure, workloads, & turnover ✅ Proritise workforce wellbeing - generous leave, reasonable hours, flexibility, professional development- whatever they need to stay. We need to treat our essential workers like they are actually essential. We cannot continue to expect people to martyr themselves through years of unpaid training, high debt, low salaries, and overwhelming workloads treating high-risk, distressed people. The system is insane. We have to stop dancing around this issue and invest in the change we all know is needed.
"We are concerned that access to specialist services continues to be constrained and workforce shortages ... are having a real impact on the ability of people to receive the support that they need in a timely way," our CEO Karen Orsborn told RNZ earlier today. Earlier today we released Kua Tīmata Te Haerenga | The Journey Has Begun—our 2024 monitoring report on mental health and addiction services, along with our updated monitoring dashboard with data up until 30 June 2023, and a Voices report, which records kōrero about access, options, and people accessing mental health and addiction services, and options available.
