I had the pleasure of speaking to attendees at the 2024 Ontario Base Hospital Group Annual General Meeting in Ottawa on Wednesday morning. My talk was titled "Time for change - progressing paramedicine in Ontario". The key items I raised in the talk were: 1. A description of practice that ignores context and is outdated 2. Inconsistent entry-to-practice education, that remains largely vocational in in mindset 3. A lack of postgraduate education to prepare for specialist roles 4. No clear career progression pathways 5. An inability to tailor scope of practice to community needs 6. An outdated and restrictive regulatory model, that is not led by the profession I proposed some ideas that will help us to address these issues and further progress paramedicine in Ontario: 1. Implement and maintain the NCFP 2. Support the need for degree level education 3. Develop postgraduate education and advanced practice roles to meet needs 4. Support and create career progression along diverse pathways 5. Stop talking about scope as a skill-set, allow flexibility and individualized scope 6. Implement a contemporary, profession-led regulatory model Thanks to Frank St-Jean and colleagues at RPPEO for the invite to speak!

I’m inspired to share this important post from Dr. Alan Batt, who has put in massive work to advance paramedic education through research, collaboration, and the development of the new 2024 NCFP. While change can bring uncertainty, strong leadership and evidence-informed plans are what we need to move forward. Dr. Batt’s vision addresses key challenges in paramedicine: outdated practices, inconsistent education, a lack of postgraduate pathways, and a regulatory model that needs to evolve. The NCFP enables change—change that can strengthen paramedic education, career progression, and, ultimately, the health and wellness of our workforce. As paramedic leaders and decision-makers, it’s time to embrace this evolution. We need to ensure paramedics are truly prepared for the realities of the career. #timeforchange

Heads up Aussie colleagues 👋 Osler’s CPD home is great value and a really fuss-free CPD home. I’m sure Osler must be the most affordable CPD home - refreshing on top of our widely rising fees elsewhere. 🫣 Moreover, I’ve liked using Osler because its app and the processes in it minimise logging time and make it easy to drop even on-the-run clinical learnings into your log. ✅ They have a great resource library that makes it easy to achieve requirements across all domains (and webinars explaining what counts for what). A VA medical center or a VA partner is responsible for contacting you about scheduling a claim exam. VA may either mail you a letter with the date and time of your appointment(s) and/or call you to find a time that fits with your schedule. If you are receiving treatment at a VA medical center, make sure VA has your current address, phone number and email information. The wrong information could cause your appointment letter to be delayed and not reach you in time. It is a good idea to call and confirm the exam time(s) and locations to make sure you and VA or the VA partner have the correct appointment information. 📞Use the phone number on your appointment letter or if you were called, use the phone number left by VA or the VA partner. If you don’t show up to your exam, you may have a longer wait to get your exam rescheduled; it could delay your claim; and/or your claim could be rated “as-is” (using only the information in your file). #MDEProgram #askKeita #militarycommunity #loyalhealthcare
