THIS is NOT NORMAL. 95% of American public schools drill students on lockdown procedures. Yet, there is almost no research affirming the value of these drills for preventing school shootings or protecting the school community when shootings do occur. Research does indicate that students, educators, and staff have experienced distress and sometimes lasting trauma as a result of active shooter drills. The results are sobering: Active shooter drills in schools are associated with increases in depression (39%), stress and anxiety (42%), and physiological health problems (23%) overall, including children from as young as five years old up to high schoolers, their parents, and teachers. Concerns over death increased by 22 percent, with words like blood, pain, clinics, and pills becoming a consistent feature of social media posts in school communities in the 90 days after a school drill. These findings unveil even more reason to pause before rushing toward active shooter drills as a potential solution to school violence, as evidence suggests that they are causing lasting emotional and physical harm to students, teachers, and the larger community. #guncontrolmatters

On the back of new reseaech into support for fathers, Julie Borninkhof joined Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Triple J's Hack program to talk about young dads. 8% of callers to PANDA are dads, but we know there are many more needing support. The new report highlighted four themes: - The changed relationship with their partner; - Confusion over their identity as provider or protector and what their in-laws and society expected of them; - Feeling left out and unvalued, including by healthcare staff; - Struggles with masculine ideals of fatherhood. Secrets to Success Introduction 3rd Post of 18 IDH-3930, Fall 2024, FGCU       Dogs, horses, chimpanzees, elephants, and whales have spectacular brains. What distinguishes our brain is its relative size to our body mass and embedded prosocial tendencies. As the numbers of neurons and their connectivity relative to body mass affect individual intelligence, so the size of groups and their relative intra-connectivity affect collective intelligence. Collective intelligence and cultural potency increase exponentially as individuals’ brain mass increases relative to their body mass, individuals become more connected, and their group becomes larger.       The advent of language and concepts facilitated communication and problem-solving, but also enabled humans to lie, cheat, and exploit others. People needed the ability to infer others’ intentions and develop norms to reward truthfulness and punish dishonesty to enjoy the benefits of language. Cultural evolution developed the emotions of pride and shame, and involved the whole community in rewarding norm conformity, sanctioning violations, and influencing people’s aspirations and activities. Members of communities give prestige to those who develop needed skills, conform to their norms, and perform essential services. They use gossip, public criticism, reputational damage, reduced marital prospects, and ostracism to sanction norm violators. Consequently, we feel pride when we conform and contribute to our groups, and shame when we disappoint them.
