It's deaf awareness week and I was surprised that learning to sign is not as scary as I thought. When starting to sign teachers may focus on signing what you speak and then progressing to structuring sentences in bsl which can be very different sentence structure to what we are used to. Yes, it gets complex like any language but you can quickly pick up some words and phrases. You could quite easily make someone's day even with just a few signs. There are apps that can help and also some Facebook influencers where they teach a sign a day, which is a great way of picking up things. With 12 million people in the UK experiencing some form of deafness, it's crucial that our workplaces reflect and accommodate this diversity. Did you know that #BritishSignLanguage is an official language since 2003? Yet, many D/deaf individuals still face significant barriers in accessing services and information. It's not just about hearing—the D/deaf community has its own rich culture, history, and identity. Here’s how we can all foster a more inclusive environment: - Always face the person you're talking to. - Speak clearly, slowly, and ensure your mouth is visible. - Be patient, repeat, or rephrase if needed. September is deaf awareness month! And a time to celebrate our deaf communities. This month aims to promote awareness, encourage inclusion, celebrate identity, and support community organizations. Here are some ways to celebrate Deaf Awareness Month: Learn about deaf culture, history, and famous deaf people. Educate family and friends about deaf culture and how to use ASL. Participate in ASL meetups to connect with other deaf people, and advocate for accessibility (e.g. asking movie theaters to offer open-captioned showings)

This week is #DeafAwarenessWeek. The aim is raise more awareness about the challenges faced by the deaf community, and to give ideas about how people can be supported.
