I can't believe it... the Coachathon 2024 is launching already! It hardly seems like it was yesterday when I found out about the Coachathon 2023 and took the tentative step to commit to supporting the MicroLoan Foundation raise vital funds for women in Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia. This year I am ready to join the tribe of voluntary coaches, have attended a briefing and completed my registration form. Why create this post? Because they need you too! Either... as a coach - there are still briefings happening next week where you can find out about the Coachathon (you have to attend a briefing to take part). Be prepared to be challenged, supported and know you are giving your time for an amazing charity. as a coachee - it's a really affordable way to experience coaching from a qualified and experienced coach (either for the first time or as a top up session). as an employer - it's a great way to offer coaching to your employees and support an amazing charity at the same time. You can block buy sessions and then offer them to your employees for their wellbeing or as part of their CPD (coaching offers range from wellbeing through to leadership development). Each coaching session will be 45 minutes long, take place on or around Wednesday 9th October 2024 and the donation per session is just £50. 4) What’s the best way to find a #Foundation to support your work in Asia and Australia? Will there ever be a simple method to research grant-giving Foundations in the region? As a non-profit funding model, Foundations are a mainstay for many organisations. So, it is unfortunate that it is so difficult to research, find and study grant-giving Foundations in Asia. The US has its Foundation Center and GuideStar (as part of Candid), China has the China Foundation Center and Australia - while not exactly focused on Foundations - has its PafGUIDE, a database of more than 3,000 Private Ancillary Funds. Most fund-raising non-profits in the region get by knowing two things: 1) Who are the main grant giving Foundations in their economies focused on their mission; 2) Who are the big Foundations in their regions who might do cross-border giving (the list is usually pretty short, but there are some like Temasek Foundation, Sasakawa Peace Foundation / 公益財団法人 笹川平和財団 and THE KADOORIE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION).   But even those non-profits with great research teams and strong networks, may not know of a big Foundation in their own economies willing to fund them unless they are introduced (and vice versa). If there are any economies in Asia (except for China) who do have publicly accessible databases on grant giving Foundations (like the US), it would be great to know more and to see how the database is being managed and used. Are there any regional organisations (maybe AVPN?) who could help with this? In the meantime, Asian non-profits can only rely on media research, their own networks and anecdotal information to try and find and engage Foundations that might fund their work. For those who do manage to find the right Foundation and successfully engage it for support, it can be life changing for the organisation. But for those lost in the wilderness of Foundation fund raising in Asia it can be both a frustrating and expensive fund-raising model! #fundraising #nonprofits #Foundations #philanthropy #Asia #development

MK:U Goes for Gold Challenge Update! 🥇 We are thrilled to share some fantastic news from the 2024 Professional Skills cohort, composed of dedicated students from MK:U and Cranfield School of Management University. Our ambitious goal was to raise £1,000 for the incredible charity, Action for Children, which works tirelessly to support families living in poverty across the UK. Shockingly, in 2024, 3 out of 10 children in the UK are living in poverty—a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by many. 😔 This challenge also coincided with the launch of the Nationwide Building Society’s #fairerfutures drive and the brand new ‘My Social Investment Platform’. The goal was to collectively cover 566 kms, the equivalent distance from our Milton Keynes campus to Paris, aiming to reach our goal just in time for the Paris Olympics. 🏅 And guess what… We did it! 🎉 By the end of July, our amazing team covered a collective distance of 800 kms and raised a whopping £2,100—achieving 210% of our original target! 💪 We couldn’t have achieved this without the unwavering support of our cohort, our growing number of donors and Nationwide’s #FairerFutures initiative, alongside the exciting new ‘My Social Investment Platform’ launched in July. 🚀 Every contribution, no matter the size, can make a significant difference. It was a great 4 days of learnings and meeting peers. As I sit down and reflect: - No system is perfect. Singapore’s social ecosystem receives great support from the government. This shapes how our Charities deliver our services. We should be thankful, but how can we get better? - Philanthropy plays a big role in Hong Kong more than government intervention. Our Charities need to get better in how we articulate the value and impact of our work to encourage more philanthropic money. - Collective action is not easy, but becoming increasingly important not only in HK but in SG as well. Certain structures in HK seed the ground for more collaboration, we need to find our own way. - Purpose and tenacity trumps all. I cannot begin to tell you the admiration I have for the HK Charities I met as they continue to serve even when faced with tremendous odds. There are 10,000 Charities fighting for the same dollar. Clarity of purpose is paramount! It was good to get out of the comfort zone. I leave with gratitude, gratitude in knowing that I am not alone, gratitude that sometimes our problems are not so big. #philanthropycollective #nextgenchangemakers
