Ready for a future where reuse takes the lead? 🌍 TOMRA’s second recommendation for the UN’s global plastics treaty: promote reuse models. Shifting to reusable packaging isn’t just about cutting down on single-use plastic. It reduces litter, waste generation, material consumption, and lowers GHG emissions. 💡 Cities like #Aarhus 🇩🇰 and #Berlin 🇩🇪 are already setting the standard. With the backing of public authorities, they’re showing that reuse isn’t just a sustainable solution, it’s also a smart, cost-effective choice for businesses and communities. Under the #PPWR, takeaways are required to implement reuse systems, with a target of at least 10% by 2030. Replacing single-use plastic with a single-use “something else” may seem like a better option for the environment, but the real problem isn’t just single-use plastic, it’s “single-use” itself 👎🗑️ More single-use isn’t going to help the waste crisis, but a circular economy focused on reuse can… According to the INC-4 Plastic Pollution Science, "Circularity in the economy is a critical part of the solution." And we agree - as long as reuse is at the center of that circle. And apart from the environmental benefits, "Modelling studies suggest that a comprehensive circular economy approach will also save governments $70 billion over the period 2021–2040 and create 700,000 additional jobs, mainly in the global South." Following our Reuse tour last week, we're sharing a new report from Zero Waste Europe ♻️ The report “Facilitating the Adoption of Takeaway Reuse Systems,” completed by Eunomia Research & Consulting, examines the costs and benefits of shifting from single-use to reusable packaging in the takeaway sector. The findings are clear: reuse can unlock huge environmental and financial gains, especially with the right policies. ♻️ Reusable packaging saves society money – The external costs of single-use packaging, like litter and carbon impacts, are far greater than the upfront costs of implementing reuse systems. 💡 Policy interventions are crucial – Incentives like levies and extended producer responsibility (EPR) fees help level the playing field and accelerate the transition to reuse. 🏙️ Reusable systems are scalable – The study shows that reuse systems can be economically viable even in smaller cities, making them a solution for all. The report also highlights City of Aarhus as a pioneer, demonstrating how the city’s innovative reuse packaging system leads the way towards a future without single-use waste.
