This approaching Human Rights Day feels especially grim as children and young people's rights are being cast aside in many ways: https://lnkd.in/gTmuaeTY (see also: links at end of post) In response to the QLD Government's Adult Crime, Adult Time proposal, CREATE Young Consultant, Elysay said: “With the number of kids in care in the [youth justice] system, there is more of a need to focus on supporting those kids. They all have these pre-established traumas and they’re constantly moving, have no emotional support so they start to express their emotional needs by lashing out with anger or assault. I think the focus should be on healing the child’s trauma. That is why they are acting the way they are acting.” CREATE advocates for a cross-jurisdictional approach to youth justice that is child-centred, evidence-based and protects the rights of children. This means: ❗Detention should be a last resort. ❗Each State and Territory must raise the MACR to 14. ❗Governments can and should do better by kids, starting with acting on evidence and what experts say (including lived experience experts). ❗Adults should listen to children and young people. ❗The protection of children's rights should be a national priority. *https://lnkd.in/gbY7ezd9 *https://lnkd.in/g7bTsaUt *https://lnkd.in/gG2jkVGv *https://lnkd.in/d5kuf47T #Jailingisfailing #RaiseTheAge #YouthJustice #ChildRights

In observance of the World Day for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse on 19 November and the World Children’s Day on 20 November, commemorating the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child adoption in 1989, the organisations endorsing this statement underscore that the most robust and effective way to preventing abuse, addressing mistreatment, and promoting child rights is through a Rights-Based Approach. A clear child rights-based approach means not only formally recognising these rights. It implies that children are bearers of inalienable and interdependent rights. For children, these rights represent the pathway to realising their full human potential, essential to their integral growth and development. Public and private institutions alike must make every effort to respect and actively promote child participation in decisions that affect them. A genuine commitment to truly listen to their voices is required and not confined to formalities. A clear child rights-based approach means not only formally recognising these rights. Child rights in America continue to lag behind international standards, as highlighted in the recent Invisible Children article comparing the International Rights of the Child with Child Rights in America. While global frameworks, like the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, set clear protections, the U.S. still faces significant gaps in addressing issues like child poverty, mental health access, and education equity. It’s crucial that we push for stronger policies and awareness around protecting our most vulnerable citizens—our children. We must prioritize their well-being and ensure their rights are fully recognized and upheld. As we advocate for change, platforms like KARA can help raise awareness and drive action through creative storytelling and shared experiences, bringing these critical issues to the forefront. #ChildRights #Advocacy #PolicyChange

We must love and respect all children, not just some children. I hope for a world where educated people don't kill innocent children who are in the way of bad people. I hope for a world where any child from any background or affiliation is protected as they are our future. And where they are not protected or where harm was not avoided, I would not accept it if it happened to my child and so I will not accept it if it happened to anyone's child. So where that has happened I pick no sides. It is simply wrong and against the international conventions protecting children. I raise my voice to make it clear to the people who lead decisions or negotiations that I would expect the governments where I vote to speak up for children's rights and if those governments are ever in conflicts or conflict negotiations I expect them to respect the children. A wrong does not make a right. Otherwise we will never get to what is right for human rights. https://lnkd.in/eqqPuXaz https://lnkd.in/eiguy-Jt

📢Have you registered for the annual OPEN Child’s Rights Seminar? In 2024, the seminar will focus on a critical issue: Online safety and the Rights of Children and Young People Children and young people are often the most affected by online harms, yet their voices are frequently left out of the policy-making process. This seminar will bring together leaders and researchers in child rights, safety, and young people's engagement to explore solutions that not only protect children and young people but also respect their right to be involved in shaping those policies. 🔑 Keynote Speaker: Anne Hollonds, National Children’s Commissioner, will discuss the importance of quality engagement with children to uphold their rights. 📆 Date: September 23rd, 2024 ⏳ Don’t miss out—secure your spot today! https://lnkd.in/gvnvxzui #ChildRights #OnlineSafety #YouthEngagement #CountdownToOPEN

The Australian Human Rights Commission's new report on #ChildJustice is a significant call to action for transformational change that puts #ChildWellbeing at the forefront. As an organisation dedicated to protecting the rights and futures of children, we strongly support recommendations for reform that address the root causes of offending by children. We appreciate the efforts of National Children's Commissioner Anne Hollonds and her team in incorporating the voices of 150 children, young people, and their families into this report. The proposed changes—a National Taskforce for child justice reform, a federal Minister for Children, a national Ministerial Council for Child Wellbeing, and a National Children’s Act—are vital steps toward ensuring that every child in Australia is protected and empowered. At UNICEF Australia, we believe that child justice reform is about building safer, more supportive environments #ForEveryChild. Read the full report: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gjdjyz2s 🔗

Every year on this International Day for Human Rights the Commissioner for Children & Young People, SA, releases her Childs Rights Progress Reports. A suite of seven reports, they assess the progress South Australia has made in relation to implementation of the recommendations made to Australia by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. The seven areas in which Australia is falling short include child health, child justice, child protection, disability, education, the environment and physical punishment. Although there is ‘some evidence of progress’ in all seven areas, there is also no evidence of progress on some of the recommendations the UN Committee has made. This means South Australia has significant work to do before we can say we have fulfilled our international obligations under the UNCRC. Today, children’s rights are misunderstood and too often ignored. In a world where children should be safe, educated, and empowered, many are instead stripped of their basic rights due to war, poverty, climate change, and exploitation. These injustices leave children vulnerable to the darkest forms of harm, including modern slavery. At Ride For Freedom, we believe in standing up for children’s rights. Through our Schools Programme, advocacy and working within our communities, we work with young advocates to raise awareness, champion safety, and ensure their voices are heard. Children deserve more than protection—they deserve participation. By including them in discussions, valuing their opinions, and learning alongside them, we create a future shaped by empathy, justice, and equality. This World Children’s Day, let’s renew our commitment to uphold children’s rights. Let’s tune into tomorrow's voices, not disregard it. Let's build a world where every child is free, safe, and empowered to dream. #WorldChildrensDay #RideForFreedom #EndModernSlavery #ChildrensRights #ListenToTheFutureLeaders #EmpowerdToDream #HumanRights #Education #Awareness #SecurePath #EndExpoitation

🌎 You probably woke up today and saw World Children’s Day marked on your calendar. “Sounds interesting, sounds important.” you thought. “What is it?” World Children’s Day celebrates and promotes the widespread acknowledgement and implementation of international children’s rights. This year, the date commemorates the 35th anniversary of the United Nations’ adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC for short): an almost universally-ratified (AKA: it has been adopted by almost every country) treaty that details a clear, global standard for protecting and empowering the world’s children. Each of the convention's 54 articles (AKA: sections) covers a right that MUST be observed in order for our kids to survive, flourish, and experience life with resolute hope. Through spending almost 7 years surrounded by children in labs and respite centres, doing child development research, and working in children’s media, I have become so passionate about the role that strong villages play in helping children to flourish. And guess what? Each of us is part of a village: a community of any size that includes neighbours, educators, parents / guardians, business owners, researchers, creators, mentors, health care practitioners, policymakers, role models, and others who directly or indirectly influence children’s lives. As I move through the rest of my mid-twenties, one of my goals is to throw myself into learning all I can about children’s rights and wellbeing so that I can become a great example to kids and optimally fulfill all of the roles I play in their villages. I want to have the greatest, most positive, and most enduring impact on all children and youth. Letting children know I’m in their corner requires knowing what they need. And knowing what they need requires learning. I recently enrolled in Harvard University’s Child Protection: Children's Rights in Theory and Practice course and I’m loving it so far, so sharing it with you here: https://lnkd.in/eeEucyXv But if you’re looking for more accessible resources, rest assured that there is no shortage of amazing ways to learn about the CRC and the antecedents to child wellbeing. I’m including some great resources below so that we can all gain the skills and knowledge needed to create the most nourishing global villages for youth: ➡ Full-text: Convention on the Rights of the Child: https://lnkd.in/eFksKgPq ➡ Child-friendly version of CRC: https://lnkd.in/ePnYGe4m ➡ Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children’s (CCRC’s) Resources for Learning About Children’s Rights: https://lnkd.in/e_5VnjTr ➡ UN’s State of the World’s Children report: annual report probing an issue that has a huge impact on children’s lives: https://lnkd.in/exEDmu5Q
